I have a Tacx Exact, which has worked more or less fine. However it's a little bit broken but more significantly it can't do thru axles. I could buy an adapter for £55 (nearly the cost of the stand itself) or buy a new one, which prob makes the most sense. Can you get a reasonable stand (ie better than the Tacx) that can do thru axles for ~£100, or do you need to spend the megabucks? What's out there?

All you need is something long enough to go through the thru-axle and the truing stand fork things and for this to be able to provide a light clamping action. A bolt or QR skewer or whatever works. It's not like there's any significant forces acting upon it while you true a wheel.

I just bought a 15mm to qr adapter from aliexpress for when I need to true something. Never used it yet, but it should work.

How about something a bit different that needs zero bench space

That's how I started out building my wheels, but using a pen and a rubber band instead- even cheaper! The wheels built up fine as well tbh. I was planning to use this if I couldn't get the truing stand to work...

I’ve got the exact same stand you have and done qr hubs, 15x100, 15x110, 12x142 and 12x148 hubs. The boost rear is a bit of a stretch but do-able. Don’t think you’d get a superboost hub in there but they’re pretty rare.

I use this adapter for any 12 or 15mm hubs:

Seems a little sarcastic. But don't take my word for it that you don't need adaptors. I only read it in Roger Musson's wheel building book, and what does he know!? See here also:

Nope, genuinely grateful for a really helpful tip. Sorry it came across as sarcastic

I bought this during one of the crc sales, was about 50% off rrp

Very good stand (even for full rrp). I just use the wheel axle of whatever wheel I'm truing, no adapters, works fine.

Note: comments say it doesn't do 148mm hubs but with a very small amount of persuasion they will squeeze in.

This is 20x times than the park tools TS-8 truing stand it replaced which sells for the same amount.

Oh, and it's stable enough to just sit on any counter \ table top without being clamped or screwed down.

Not my photo

I've got an on one jobsworth stand I could part with.

It's well used and has been altered to take boost hubs. Works fine, but the bolt holding the truing arm has got bent. Functions fine.

£30+ post? It is heavy.
