Can anyone recommend me a route somewhere near the M6 please? I'm driving to Scotland and want to break the journey up with a night camping and then a ride the next day.

I'm with my girlfriend and she isn't a bad rider but I'm hoping for a route that isn't too challenging. Something along the lines of a red route trail centre. (Not a trail centre though).

I was planning to ride in the Howgill Fells but it seems that they won't have held up well to all this wet weather we have had recently.

Thanks

Howgills hold up pretty good all year. a bit muddy at the bottom of bowderdale if done clockwise. rest is pretty ok.

We are coming from the forest of Dean area. I've ridden the garburn pass and enjoyed it but i think the other half would find the main descent a little bit hard as she's not a fan of loose rocks. She's more used to mud and roots!

It's gotta be the lakes, that distance is just about right plus it's such a beautiful place to camp. How about camping at castleriggfarm.com (with superb views of skiddaw) and riding the tour of Skiddaw, http://flattyres-mtb.co.uk/route-guides/lake-district-mtb-routes/skiddaw-circuit-and-summit/ but walking the Lonscale fell rocks so there's virtually no tech.
Walk down to Keswick for tea and get a taxi back up the hill.

I'd rather ride the Howgills the Farelton Knot after rain. Farelton gets quite claggy, but the sun is out now so who knows. Both a very close to the M6.

There is a good route near Tebay that goes over Roundthwaite common. It is a nice loop with some rocky chunder, but not too much. Perhaps not a red route though.

There was also a loop that combined bits of Roundthwaite and the Howgills in a STW issue some years back.
