...for my Ti456.

Going on a wee tour of Ireland and don't fancy carrying everything on my back, and I've almost convinced myself that a new bike specifically for the purpose is overkill...

Not had panniers or anything like it before, so if there better/other options I'm open to suggestions :o)

Panniers - Ortlieb Back Rollers

Rack - the Super Tourist DX Disk is almost guaranteed to fit, is sturdy and is not horrendously expensive.

Oh - and consider a handle bar bag too. Very handy for camera, wallet, maps, gels etc. Can be taken off the bike easily and helps spread the weight.

You're planning to go to Ireland. Where it sometimes rains. Do you want to have wet gear or dry gear?

Ortlieb is expensive because it works.

Not knocking Ortlieb stuff, just saying it was more expensive than I had imagined! Like you say, can't put a price on dry kit 😉

Ton - I'm interested. Any pics, and did you have a figure in mind?

Ton - will that fit on a 456 (assuming it has disc brakes)?

Best rack - tubus - very expensive but so much better made than others. topeak as druidh says looks well made but heavy ( I sold mine) Cheap light strong - pick any two.

don't touch tortec racks - badly made and break IME - bust two of them. Ortleib are good and waterproof but again rather heavy - you can use chepo ones ( as I do ) and put all your kit in placcy bags instead - and then bugee on to racks 'cos they jump off.

Thanks all. This is the first time I've done any touring so I'm trying to keep the spend down where it's sensible to do so.

We'll be on a mix of bikes by the looks of it - at least cyclocross bikes and hardtails - so I think the terrain will be relatively smooth.

Ton - sounds good, I'll go for that if it's £20 posted. My email is in my profile.

Ortlieb panniers well made and keep all contents dry, I a use surly nice rack it's heavy as , but is pretty pimp as far as pannier racks go, I've got a topeak super tourist too that does just a good a job as my surly one.

I've used Super tourist rack by Topeak for my commutes and shopping.

Its cheaper than some but carries 25kg no prob.

I also have a Tortec Expedition Rack and thats been great too.

Either way the disc versions fit a treat But I prefer tortecs flexibility towards fitting on the seat stays rather than Topeaks bending clamps.

(Also unless you have extra eyelets you may need P-clips when fitting mud guards when using racks that are disc specific should you fit mudguards for your tour.)

Enjoy your tour!

...and for anyone who is looking, it looks like they've got some very keenly priced Ortlieb bags and Tubus racks over at rockandrescue.

I went for the pair of Ortlieb back roller city pannier bags for £50 😀

I've got the Topeak Super Tourist DX and the Ortlieb City roller panniers for my P7 and they work great. My gear got damp once but it was exceptionally wet, I was riding down a flooded road...I think the water came in via the frame side mounts/screw holes.
