I’m heading over to the big island (from the Isle of Wight) with the girlfriend tonight, we need to be in Glastonbury Sunday for a wedding rehearsal so thought we’d come over a day early in the camper and do something as the weather looks half decent
We fancy taking our e-tandem over, it’s a DIY conversion on a fairly old mtb tandem so can do bridleways but not really up to anything rough or too hilly, so we were thinking of either some bridleway loop in the New Forest or a canal path or old railway line or something somewhere in Somerset
Spec:
Not rough, not hilly, scenic, all dayer at a leisurely pace
Village pub stop would be nice but would be equally happy taking my camping stove and cooking something up in the middle of nowhere
Any recommendations?
Start in Glastonbury head to Wells following National Cycle Network Blue Signs return via Wookey , Fenny Castle Westhay make for Marsh's Hub cafe , just after there on your left you can follow the old railway line all the way back to Glastonbury. After the first section don't cross straight over look to your left you'll see the Railway Inn , it's got a huge garden they don't do food though so have something in Wookey at the Hub they do great coffee and lush grub 👍PM if you want any more info .It's less than 30 miles all flat
The railway path oldfart mentions goes through Shapwick Heath and Ham Wall bird reserves, its not marked as bridleway on the map but totally legit (and if you're lucky you'll see the egrets and/or marsh harriers).
There's various other bridleway connections along old droves on Westhay and Tadham moor which are more or less navigable.
If you fancy going further afield head out towards the coast, I'd avoid the A39 but the back roads over the levels are all fine.
If you get to Cheddar across the levels from Glastonbury you could then go out and back on the Strawberry Line to Yatton.
there’s a campsite in Cheddar and you can walk or cycle to Cheddar Ales brewery tap, usually have music Saturdays and food wagons
