For use on my road bike in the upcoming autumn - I'm getting numb hands on longer rides and would like something with a gel insert to take a bit of vibration damping.
Spesh BG Gel are excellent. I'd deal with the problem not the symptom though, I can do a 6 hour ride with no gloves and. I discomfort.

As above, it's not a lack-of-gel-glove problem. You get it on longer rides because as you get fatigued, you begin to take more weight on your hands, and they go numb.
It's probably related to you sitting a wee bit too far forward and being a wee bit too high. I'd suggest dropping your seat by 1 cm and putting it back by 1 cm for starters.
