After some advice from the stw road experts 🙂
I'm looking to upgrade the standard wheels (aksium disc) on my caad12. Ideally I want to shave a fair chunk of weight (standard wheels are over 2kg) and go tubeless at the same time on some wider tyres. I'll be buying via cyclescheme.
The wheels will need to be;
- Standard q/r (100 and 135 widths)
- Tubeless compatible/ready
- Wide enough to suit a 28 - 30mm tyre
- Light (ish), ideally around 1500g but if too much of an ask maybe around 1600/1650 max? They do need to be strong enough for Derbyshire's poor roads though.
- Profile wise I don't mind them being a bit aero (and, well, they look pretty cool don't they)
- Most importantly, I want to get these on cyclescheme, so they need to be from a shop that will do that or mail order via crc, wiggle, merlin etc that do cyclescheme now.
I've looked at loads and been in contact with a few people/shops but to be honest it's a bit of a minefield, if it was MTB stuff I'd have no probs selecting a set.
Let me know what wheelsets you have/recommend etc and also which tubeless tyres? schwalbe pro ones seem to be popular?
Many thanks.
I went with Fulcrum Quattro Carbon Discs. I almost went for a pair of Campag Zonda Discs which I'd probably have been just as happy with.
Edit: not tubeless ready though. At least not the Fulcrums.
I'm after the same thing for my 'cross bike. The Hunt Aero Lights are top of the list at the moment. Hunt have assured me they are strong enough for the cobble classic cyclos and cyclocross racing.
I’ve just got a Caad12 disc myself - although it came with some really crap wheels - not even as good as Aksiums 😞. The bike shop suggested fulcrum can have bearing issues and they would source Mavic / Hope / Hunt.
I went for Hunt 4season Road disc wheels. For £299 they are cheaper than the equivalent Hope of Mavic wheels, yet come tubeless ready (even with valves and taped) and are lighter than both.
They look really nice on the bike and feel quick. Even though overall the bike is heavier than my last (rim brakes) one I’m starting to overhaul all my pr’s anyway. And I love the braking power.
For £100 more there are also the aero lights mentioned above - they go sub 1500grams for the pair then - but I couldn’t justify the extra £100.
There is a crash replacement scheme (that I’ve had to use) - it gives you 30% off the rrp of a new rim or wheel. If you replace a rim they send that out to you and you have to pay your lbs to lace it in.
Thanks.
Yes looked at Hunts but can't find anywhere that will do them on cyclescheme.
I got the Prime Race from Wiggle the other week. 1600g and seem a bargain for £170. All the axle options and tubeless ready. Not actually ridden them yet though...
Looked at the primes too. I'd probably go carbon in those though but they don't seem to be that wide (16.5mm internal).
The whole range does look good vfm, it just the hubs that worry me a little on a £600+ set of wheels.
When you say on cyclescheme do you mean on a bike to work voucher - but just for components?
Yes cyclescheme voucher, but just for components.
I thought I'd found the perfect wheelset in the Shimano RX830. Correct axles, tubeless, deep ish section, just wide enough, ultegra level hubs.
But they weigh circa 1800g. Am I reading too much into the weight side of things?
very pleased with roval slx24 disc bought from sigma sports for £500
Stan's Grail? No idea if cyclescheme compatible, but tick all the other boxes.
The Rovals look good, ideally would of liked them a bit deeper/more aero but other than that the specs look good. You got any pics of them on the bike?
As for stans, not even thought about them, I'll have a search round, cheers.
(without bothering my arse to actually look 😉 )
somebody like lightbicycle would prob do you a set cheaper than cyclescheme can, if you can stomach a short wait
Anyone running the Prime (crc/wiggle) carbon wheels?
Just wondering if they're wide enough for a 28mm tyre?
I thought the whole point in cycleschene is that it had to buy a bike for commuting on - you can’t just use it for components?
Running Prime Peloton, cheapest of the range. Tubeless 32mm are fine, don't seem to be the strongest but what do you expect for just over a ton? A little nipple tweak now again sorts them out- I'm 72kg for reference.
Cyclescheme can be used for a bike, a bike and safety gear or just components ie. groupsets wheelsets etc. There's not many things excluded, I seem to remember GPS/Garmin's etc are a no-no.
The 'whole point' is it's a tax free way of enabling you to buy things that let you ride to work. Whether that be a bike, replacing worn components or the safety gear you wear whilst commuting. You don't have to buy a bike to use cyclescheme, but that's not the question I was asking 🙂
Cheers, but I think the prime peloton are a fair bit wider than the carbon versions so they would easily suit a wider tyre.
The carbons come up narrower than the aksiums currently on there, which is the only thing stopping me going for them.
