Staying in Innerleithen for a week and we are looking for a decent hike, happy to drive for an hour to find it.
Something along the lines of Scafold Pike,Old Man Of Coniston, Buttermere etc etc

Whats out there? TIA

IIRC Tinto hill is the highest thing around but not hugely exciting  Lammer law is OKish as a walk. Eilden hills south of melrose? Iron age fort to look at and nice and steep.   Its all grouse moor green desert really.

Pentlands have some really nice walks including the main ridge ( West kip to flotterstone Inn) best done with a bike at one end so you can walk the whole ridge and bike back to your car but I am not sure worth driving for. You won't get anything like those hills you mention within an hours drive I don't think

You could have a look at White Coomb and/or Hart Fell, a pair of Corbetts in the hills a little way NE of Moffat. They're about the highest things for miles around, and can be done individually from the A708 that runs along the SE side of the range, or combined to make a rather longer walk (although it might involve some schlepping along said road to get back to the car). There are some crags and steep ground shown on the OS map, and it's about 40 miles from Inners which roughly meets your 1-hour drive parameter. If that sounds like rather a big day, an alternative is the slightly higher Broad Law, just to the NW of Meggett Reservoir; easily walked from Talla Linfoots or the Meggett Stone. Although that, from recollection, is just a big grassy lump. I did it with snow on the ground, but it's certainly not very rocky.

It's two hours to even the north Lake District, and those are further.

Some good circular walks from the.Southern upload way.

Link here to download a pdf.

https://www.scotborders.gov.uk/downloads/file/1676/southern_upland_way_short_walks

A great section and one of the highest is the a circular over Gateshaw Rig , esp this time of year when the heather is out.

This is on the section south West of Moffat.

We walked up the valley to Selcoth Burn where the views are superb down the nareow valley, then retraced 400m and up onto the Croft Head and down the ridge to Gateshaw Rig on the.SUW high route.

But lots of great walking around Innerleithen as well.

The same council site has pdf of walks too.

Another classic is a circular passing the Grey Mares Tail waterfall and go beyond it passing the Loch and around rhe hill tops ,not done that one yet myself ,as always just got to the Loch.

Windlestraw Law, the local biggish hill is worth a visit.  There are numerous ways up, usually from the Leithen Water road, but along the ridges above Walkerburn or The Golfie (watch out for bikes 🙂 ) is a good option.  Nothing like your Lakes mentions but good big sky country. A bit moist underfoot mind .

Agree with the love for Grey Mares Tail and White Coombe too.

Edit above.

South East of Moffat for the SUW section I mentioned above!

It has various terrain and waterfalls to see etc,  unlike some more open hill type walks in the area.

Think I'd probably pick the Pentlands but TBH you're in the wrong place for a decent hike.

i liked White Coomb to grey mares tail, but if you wanted a big walk, you could continue to Hart Fell and/or the Devils Beeftub (or the other way round)
Theres some good ridge walks on the other side of the road too, up from capplegill, on the southern upland way, but i cant remember which are the best bits

You're clearly a lunatic. There are loads of hikes available from the doorstep.

Gypsy glen, manor valley to megget to talla for a swim in in the Linn's and a stop over in games hope bothy

John Buchan way, southern upland way from loch of the Lowe's. Taking in grey mares tale. Grey mares tale.

It's all hills and valleys and hee haw people south of the tweed.
