I quite like having a bell on the bike as it seems a good way to alert walkers and generally gets a more positive response.
But the bells I have, several cheap but different models, don’t seem to work in the wet! Anyone know of a bell will work in all weather?

Spur Cycles

Pricey, yes, also beautiful. Best put on a gift list - hopefully you have a birthday soon.

EDIT: I see the Crane ENE is similar and half price. Go with that maybe!

Timber is really good for warning walkers, every walker that I've passed has smiled at the gentle tinkling. A normal bell can be misconstrued as "get out of my way", the mini cow bell sound can't.

Timber is good for riding rough trails in busy areas, pretty useless for tarmac cyclepaths, as you have wiggle your bars. In current under tyre conditions, f that.

I bought a knog oi for doing the WHW in August, seemed really good and didn't look like a bell, but went OTB descending to Beinglas campsite and wrecked it before I got the chance to use it 😂

Timber bell here. Folk hear you coming from a way back, makes it all very easy even on busy paths. Cycling the Danube two summers ago we were complimented on them several times (in several languages!).

I had the Oi Luxe on my gravel bike. It looked nice with the leather trim matching my bar tape. But then an OTB also wrote it off, also leaving about a 3” scar above my knee as the ‘paperclip’ style trigger did its worst.

I’m a sucker for the look though so just ordered a standard oi to replace it.

I keep thinking my Timber bell has broken but nah, it only works well when violently shaken.

This. Does often clog up with filth so does get quieter on occasion in the winter slop.

Wanted to love it, bit meh.

Timber Bell.

It raises a smile rather than an annoyance.

EDIT: Apparently it's available in a shop on this very website. Who knew?

My knog oi luxe rattled itself apart on a fairly tame gravel ride. I’m not saying it’s not suitable for off road, but I do wonder if tightening it up a bit every now and again might have prevented it.

Timber bell - plus it seems to make even the grumpiest of walkers smile - as you sound like a cow.

Only one issue - a horse-ist , who told me the bell was caring her horse ( Like how did I know). So as discussion ensued - with me pointing out, if it wasn't ringing, then me coming past would have scared said horse.
I suggested the horse would wear a sign that said"scared of bells".

But mostly it has been good ... even with most hose riders.
Parents with kids seem to be a challenge no matter what you do ...

Well I wouldn't like to be having to give the bars a good shake whilst doing 15mph (+-) on a flattish track to warn people of my impending approach.

This is what you need, so much more satisfying in use...

Timber been here too. Completely emasculating (in a good way) and ive not had a negative comment about it yet. Best off road but when in flat sections a tiny bar wiggle does the job.

It has 2 settings (as well as off, of course) so I generally tone it down for horses just in case.

I have mine facing almost downward as that's allows the little weight to bounce around the most even on flatter tracks.

The timber bell proved invaluable over lock down when more people were out in the countryside.

As someone said, STW sell them on the site.👍

I have a PDW bell on my gravel bike mounted to the steerer tube. Really like it.

Have a Timber bell for the MTB. Excellent.

On the road bikes I have one of these: https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/BEHOGSST/holdsworth-gran-sport-headset-spacer-bell . Use the headset spacer mount and it doesn’t take up handlebar space, the ting sustains for aaages.

Don’t be spending £40. That way lies madness

The Timber bell needs to be vertical to be it's most sensitive, if you have it at an angle to donger will rest against the bell and won't tinkle. When it's right you don't need to shake the bike around, it's just a tiny shimmy on the bars that's not going to be a problem at 10mph on a shared path.

Horses...you should call out and say hello to horses, if you ping a bell at them, how will they know if you are a safe human, or a plastic bag or a killer wheelie bin? In all seriousness, if you say hello to a horse before passing, you will almost always get a positive response from the rider.

Bought some Knogg Oi bells when they were on Kickstarter. The different colours/metals make different sounds. But the bells are not very robust, some make fairly ‘dead’ pings, and the spring pinger unhooks if you’re a bit heavy handed with it. Nice but too quiet and a bit meh on the build quality.

got one of those planetx/on-one headset-mounted ones a while back. Fairly harsh and short-lived ping but a neat bell.

Saw Lion bells mentioned on here a week or so ago. Listened to their ping online. Lovely. Bought one for #1 child who complained about having no means to make people aware of their presence on the way to college. Naturally bought one for me too, being greedy and all. Sounds great. Looks good. Works OK so far.

want a Timber/bear bell for one bike. Just seems a neat thing. Though wary of sounding like an over-laden camper with it dingling all the time along the trail.

I have a spur cycle copy. It's ok.

I like the look of these:

but I've never come across one. Has anyone given them try?

Yup. Bell snobbery is just baffling to my tiny brain.

Timber - here’s my review https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/timber-bell-a-short-review/

It’s still true, and the comments above about having it positioned vertically are correct.

I find that the large crane bells as per tjagain's picture are loud and have a lovely sustain.

I've got a timber bell and like it, but recently I've been quite taken by the idea of a clown horn.

You'd have to be pretty grumpy to object to that.
