We have had brilliant 3 dayers staying at Hawkshead or Coniston YHA and riding from the door. Plenty to choose from. We've also stayed at Ambleside for the weekend and driven out to Skiddaw for one day.

Did this last September

Could easily be done self-supported.

Good luck

Fancy the Lakes200 myself!

That does look good, sub-24 seems easily doable, depending on the hike a bike stuff, surprised none of the endurance guys have done it!

I walked along that the other week - Ullswater - it looked immense fun. Couldn't help but look at the terrain and plan the line I would ride down it....

I'm up in Ambleside all week with the road bikes.
Tempted to pop back home mid-week (50mins down the motorway) and swap the roadie for the MTB...

Don't forget the special bike bus between Windermere and Keswick that can help you cover ground if you are doing it car free.

Ullswater singletrack is best done very early or late in the day.

Elterwater YHA is great and the pub is superb

Ambleside YHA does a mean breakfast buffet

The ullswater single is okayishhh, well it's more of a dirt track than actual ribbony singletrack. If I were you don't do the 2nd bit after sandwick coz it's bloody awful. It is next to the lake and all that very beautiful but as a bike ride it's terrible. Lots of rocks, not just small ones but massive ones you have to carry your bike over and it's very very frustrating because you can never get any sort of speed up whatsoever. You'll know when you reach the end of the first part coz there is a massive what can only be described as a massive tit in front of you. According to the map it's called hallin fell. If I were to do it again I'd road ride back to pooley bridge or over some road and bridleway to patterdale and then onwards, have a look at a map. You have been warned!!

Rode the ullswater path at the weekend, both ways, really enjoyed it. As Rik says, some trialsy type ups and downs, I'd struggle to say which direction is best. Possibly north to south for the last descent.

Was infinitely more enjoyable than carrying bikes for over 3 hours in 2 feet of snow up on high street! 😯

Hi no beer. Did you actually attempt High Street in the snow? We could see the snow from where we were on Cat Bells on Saturday and it looked REALLY thick! Did you get to the top and walk / ride back down? We opted for a Borrowdale route as the cheeky stuff on Ullswater looked like it would be a snow trudge.

Any pics?

Sanny

My views on the Ullswater shore path run north to south are the complete opposite of jekkyl.

Its a fantastic, challenging rock fest. Its what mountain biking is about.

Sanny, we were a wee bit late getting to patterdale on Saturdays and missed Tom, Gav and Ross. We decided to head up from there to hayeswater reservoir, then pushed up to the knott, at which point we should really have turned back, but a mixture of optimism and stubbornness drove us on!. Up over raise as well, probably pushed and carried the bikes through two feet of snow(at this point very glad i had my hardtail!) for over three hours, eventually bailed off high street down a footpath to martindale, which was mentally fast, and as slippery as greased weasel shite. Then headed back to patterdale via the ullswater path, by which point it was a lovely day.

The others opted for garburn, but mistakenly did it the wrong way round. On the Sunday we did an out and back to pooley bridge, but came back up over askham moor (right at the north end of high street) and that was a really long fast bridleway, right back to the start of the ullswater path again.

A weekend victory stolen from the jaws of defeat!.

Tomaso, I think Jekyll is referring to the wee footpath section at the north end, not the whole path in general, I haven't ridden this section, so can't comment.

Any pics of your adventure? Sounds hard going, Greg! I think Borrowdale with added cheek was the better option on Saturday.

So I'm guessing the guys rode Garburn anti clockwise? Great on a dry Spring day, not so good when the trails are sopping wet since they improved the path.

Aye, they went from Ambleside, rode anti clockwise, and then finished down Jenkins crag. I forgot my camera, so I'm waiting on Des and Robin emailing me pics.

Gotcha! Both ways are good on the right day but the last time I rode Garburn, the Kentmere side had been improved and was a bit of a loose, horrible mess. It definitely needed some erosion to get it back to its previous self.

High Street. In the snow. Hardcore. Nuff said! 😀
