love the ride of my Nomad (Mk1) but not happy with the high maintenance required of the VP link bearings, despite being a pathological tinkerer I resent HAVING to do so every 6 months.

I was pretty close to just going for a new Heckler as it will fit me as well as the nomad and every part will be a straight lift.

Before I press "buy", what am I missing? Had liked the look of the Nukeproof Mega but a 1yr warranty on a brand-new-to-the-market not tried and tested model is a big spanner in that works, but trying to keep budget around £1000 so wont stretch to a Transition Covert, SC Butcher and many other examples in Jedi's otherwise similar thread.

Follow up/tangent Q, what is there out there second-hand that would be in budget and a must-consider (maybe a later Nomad?!).

Did you get the email from On-one about their Titus frame sell off? Horst link'ed El Guapo is 155mm and has some rather good reviews.

CLICKY

I may be a tad biased as I'm waiting for mine to arrive 😛

I've got an 18" 2010 Orange Alpine frame available if that's of any interest?

Can you go over that limit at all?
Mythic Rune

I have one and love it: It can be built up around 30lbs for AM duties or heavier for mini dh duties.

In terms of maintenence: It runs on Igus bushings and yes, it does require more servicing than bearings, but because they are bushings, it is no more onerous than re-greasing them every few months.

Plus, a full set of bushings will only set you back around £26.

What is TT length on the alpine?
ASR and El Guapo both worth further research, funny as we rode in colorado this summer where yeti are based and every second bike is a yeti and as a rule i think they make ugly bikes but that looks okay.

like the el guapo but what does $999 work out at with taxes, shipping and then you have to punt for a shock?

Mythic nice but if i push the budget to 1300 theres LOADS of choice

El Guapo Inc shock works out at $1222+postage ($200 max) so roughly $1422 or £891.09 at today's exchange rate. Still safely inside your £1000 budget. I should be on commission - are you listening On-One? I want a discount!

I steered clear of the El Guapo when I was looking because I thought the head angle was too steep for a bike of that travel and intended usage.

Isn't it around 68 degrees?

Munqechick - don't forget that Titus have gone bust so you won't be able to get warranty back up from them if you get an El-Guapo. I suppose On-One would have to sort that out if they're selling off the frames though?

Yep. Same as the orange patriot I used to have which had more travel. I'm going to try it as is and if it feels too steep invest in a cane creek angle set - problem solved 🙂

Edit - and if you check the Titus website On-One are honoring all the warranty issues - Edit

I might have been going on about it a bit, but I have just bought a s/h Cube Fritzz The One (complete bike) for £1350 and am delighted with it so far.

You're welcome to try mine out (medium) if you're in South East.

It's a shame they don't do a frame only, but a Giant Reign with 160mm/36 Forks is really hard to beat. If Giant did a frame only it would probably only be £900 new. That's the 2011 model. Older ones were heaver and steeper.

Trying to make exactly the same descion.

Had an El Guapo on order but I had a snout on the HM R&C site and I think you will find buy the time the vat and import tax is added they will be closer to £1200 all in.

Dont thinks the Head angle is deamed a problem because the slighty lower BB compensates.

I canceled because I just cant make my mind up! Seems its very capable frame and light for its strength but I just could't fall in love with its looks.. Maybe just a bit too flash for me it that makes any sense!

I know im not the best rider at the "Rad and Gnarly!" end of the spectrum and considering I'm planning on hanging some nice kit on a frame as if Im going to do it once I might as well do it properly, Im trying to avoid that old bloke/ flash over biked image!

I like the coverts because I dont think they scream look at me and looks like a nice alrounder.. Back in the day I used to use my old GSpot for everything including XC so Im not adverse to carrying more weight than needed!
Mega's nice, I like it a lot its light and good value but it wont run a triple(spells 10 speed on the horizon!) and means adding new back wheel to my list of new front wheel, forks and head set.

Seen the meta 55 carbon factory kits for £2,000 which in reality would more than meet my needs. I tell myself that french fellows won the mega on one ffs!

Decisions decisions!!!

Sorry for late reply. It's 577mm, same as this years one. It is quite a long bike, I've had to spin the bars before now to fit it in uplift trailers.

Devinci Hectik

160mm all-mountain bike with proper FSR 4-bar suspension and lifetime warranty on frame, sealed needle-roller bearing on all pivots and full length seatube with steep seat angle to put you above the cranks so climbs well, but with 67 degree HA (160mm fork) for high speed descending with confidence, taper head tube, grease ports, etc.

I use it as a "trail bike" for XC riding, but it also handles up-lift DH trips to Wales and even the odd DH race no problem 😉

speak nicely to the people at Freeborn, frame with Fox RP23 XV BV shock should be around your budget...

after more reading the yeti looks like a bit of an odd bike, basically a long travel XC bike with geom and dimensions less suited to dh/playability that most 6"+ bikes offer. Maybe why theyve sold so few as its a non-niche.

On One have said they will pick up titus warranty as the new owner, they are just trying to boost some cashflow by blowing out the old stock.

hugo I'd be interested to see your final cost as I'm not sure your numbers are right. $1200 is good for frame and shock, but on top of shipping youve got import tax (4%?) and VAT (20% if bought today) which ties up with sodajims estimates.

Just seen on other "Mega" thread the nukeproof warranty will be 2 years, which is equal to SC.

Hey Munque-chick

I'm in Oz and got mine today without the shock (which i'm getting seperately from CRC) for a grand total of $1242.57 USD (inc shipping) and I managed to avoid sales tax at this end as it was under $1000 - the limit for australian imports.

I never bought a frame from overseas when I lived in The UK so don't know what sort of import duty you'd have to pay. You wouldn't have to pay VAT on a parcel would you?

Surely if the issue is maintenance and the budget is £1000, then the Heckler is the only option available to you? Everything else being suggested here seems to suffer from the same bearing overload. 😀

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/post/internet.htm

I dont hink the above link was the same point I started from the other day when trying to work out import duty and Vat but it might point you in the right direction..

Unfortuately its not totally clear (suprise suprise from HRC) as I struggled to find the list for what code a bike frame would fall under for import duty but I worked off the higher average given of 10% (though it could be less or more than this) of the combined purchase AND shipping cost as directed. Im assuming you then have to ad the vat on top but please be aware I'v not importedany higher value goods before so could be working it out slighty wrong. Either way I dont think the El Gupo with shock is going to sneek in under the magic grand.

I'd kind of given up intrest at this point so I didnt bother checking the correct size and tune's but CRC do have various 2010 Monarch 4.2 shocks in diffent tunes for around the £180 mark at the moment. I havent bothed doing the maths but you might be able to bring in the fame only, then buy the shock from CRC if they have the right one to get a better price but - I doubt theres much in it by the time bushings are included..

Im trying to keep my buy under a 2k frame fork front wheel(idealy back wheel to match) combo..
Not so easy when you like 36's!

Any one know much about the new RS sectors in that are they looking like the new pike? I could make a very nice frame work with a set when I admit to myself I dont need new fox 36's with their new sliper gold stanchions....... LT 2010 Blur on Leisure lakes for example at £1400..

i dont need 36's i dont need 36's i dont need 36's i dont need 36's i dont need 36's....

Heckler is great if your not much of a tweeker.. I sold several in a former life..

If you do like to play with settings or you like to fiddle becuse you just cant leave things alone can you 😳 the price goes over for shocks with knobs an levers

Sancho, really like the look of the covert but just not sure I'd like the ride of a single pivot much. How does it compare to other bikes you've ridden?

Ive found it climbs remarkably well 16 minutes to the top of Keighley gate.
and I prefer it to the Spicy which people rave about how it climbs, its mint in the tight rocky woods around Bingley and uper fast on the rocky descents of the peaks.

£100 more now mind with droper post guides and a tweeked shock tune but id pay that for the polished alone

must be good, the dealers I'v contacted are still trying to hold out full price on the 010's, even with the other goodies I need as well not a great deal of movemnt..

Doesnt any one know how to have a good old fashioned deal up anymore?! Good to see the recession's over though! 🙄

My bro-in-law is now selling Transition in Australia (he's the North Queensland rep), he loves 'em (races a TR250) and has been trying to convince me to get a Covert off him instead of my intended Ibis HD 140... still think I'll stick with the Mojo (in love with the looks) but the Covert does look very good!

Sancho, thats cool budy no problems, I too was a dealer in a long forgotten previous career so its why im struggling to grasp some shop's understanding of a bird in the hand with an itchy credit card..
I also know I doese'nt automaticly mean you dont know what your talking about either!
Remember kids, dealers can some times give honest opinions too 😉

food for thought though for you
covert frame
36 talas rlc
head set
and suitable front wheel (or set)

Just watching a vid on a Mythic Spitfire, I know its only a 5" but I find anything with any adjustable H/A of 66-68 and bb from 12.8 to 13.6 interesting

Surely the only other frames worth considering are true single pivot designs, as the rest will all have loads of bearings to replace like the nomad.

Morewood make some bikes that look like there upto the task, similar to Orange but better.

im not anti multi link bearings, my previous bike was a kona coiler and we also have a Reign, but the lower VP linkage on the Mk1 nomad is infamous for being high maintenance.

Like the look of the Hectik and a good spot on the cheap Covert, sadly ita a large.

Keep getting drawn to the ridiculous bargain that is the ASR7 (a grand off RRP on the frame), their sizing recommendations are whack though, their small (17.7" seat tube, 22.5" toptube pretty similar to my medium nomad) is recommended for 5'3" to 5'7" 😯

Apparently they size up very large, so a small is more like a medium for most, so I've heard (though that doesn't tally up very well with the 5'3" to 5'7" advice 😕 ?). I'm still really tempted by one, they just look so similar on paper to the £2100 Mojo HD I'm about to buy... £1300 could do a lot of things!

psychle the mojo HD160 is my dream bike but I dont have that kind of money, sadly 😥 Been doing paper comparisons and the yeti looks better than i thought. It is described as having long chain stays but they are (fractionally) shorter than a hecklers, 67 deg headtube with 160mm fork compares favourably with the 69 on a 140 of the heckler. 12mm rear axle and tapered steerer will mean some expense (I have standard 9mm on a hope pro2 and 1 1/8th fork and headset) but its £120 less than the heckler, and comes with a better shock which SC charge >£100 to upgrade. Toptube and seattube on yeti small are similar to SC medium which fits me bang on, and 30.9mm seatpost means my Joplin fits. Hmmmm....

thread resurrection as I am likely to click "buy" on a Yeti 7 in the next 24hrs. Insanely cheap and the more Ive read the better it sounds.

Before I do are there any good deals out there? Seen the Orange Alpine in the probikeshop.fr thread, which if I could swap the CCDB for lesser shock and cash would bring it in on budget, but its a shame they use a 27.2 seattube which means my joplin wont work.

CRC doing various Rocky Mountain Slayers for ~£800 but dont know much about em and reviews are scarce.

Have I missed a hidden killer deal?
