[Closed] Recommend darkside padded lycra shorts

Bibs. You want bibs. Removes the pressure around the waistband which is worse on a road bike as youre leaning into it.

Sadly like saddles there is an element of subjective fit. Pearl Izumis fit me (well, their cheaper range, bought a more expensive version in the same size and couldnt even get them over my knees 🙄 ).

Got a pair of DHBs cheap and quickly consigned them to the duff drawer. Got a pair of Sportful Giro and very impressed with fit, finish and materials for the money. Giordana also fit me and their higher end stuff has a pad that is thin but very effective. Their Giordana FRC is expensive but like wearing nothing, in a good way.

Since buying my Howies Bibs they are by far the comfiest over my Sportful and Assos bibs by a country mile. Wore my Sportful ones on this evenings ride and needed to ajust myself achem 😳 I am going to buy a second pair of Howies as I forget I'm wearing them. Buy some you wont be disappointed.

Just got another road bike myself. Got some Howies bibs too after reading the last couple of threads on here Went out at 9pm for a quick spin, got in at 10pm, still wearing them now. Bloody hell they're lovely. Leg grippers are particularly good as they don't have any silicone to grab your leg hairs if you're a pretend roadie like me who doesn't shave. Paid £56 from Wiggle with some reward thing. Going to struggle to wear any of my other undershorts now to be honest, road or mtb. PS - missus says I look "hot" but she may be biased.

The DHB Aeron Pro bibs - not the standard ones, the Pro - are good. The pad's not ridiculously bulky, but still works well. Construction isn't as good as the posh Rapha/Assos/top-end Gore Bikewear, but mine have done okay. Not used the Howies ones. My only experience with gel pads suggests that they get horribly sweaty in hot weather, they were Lusso ones too I think.

*I know I am in the minority of preferring shorts to bibs.

dhb Aeron Pro here, very good shorts indeed for reasonable money.

How much better are the Howies over the Funkier? I wasn't anticipating on spending lots of money but I don't want half the performance over another bib short either. If its mainly visual and slightly better look/seamless I'd be more than happy with the Funkier shorts.

Make sure they fit - everyone is a slightly different shape and the pad needs to be in the right place under your sit bones when in a cycling position. Sizing varies a lot between brands. Either go to a shop and try on different sizes and makes (then buy there, to be fair) or order different sizes form t'internet and return the wrong ones.

Try the Scott stiff from Start Cycles. You can normally pick up some posh stuff for not too much. I bought some Scott pro bibs and have been really happy with them. Much more comfortable that normal shorts and the pad is great too....small but very effective.

Madison Road Race for me-quality is fantastic, the best I've worn & I've had plenty to compare with!
Don't let the own brand put you off until you've tried them.

Pearl Izumi here however, as has been said, different brands seem to suit different shapes.

Embrace the bib-shorts, you'll wonder why you didn't do it years ago.

bib shorts . Endura work for me though no for everyone. Morvelo for a fancier look and nice fit. But checking sizing, be prepared to send a pair back at least once.

Lusso ones are good - I think I've got the 'carbon' version.

I have a pair of Specialised roadie shorts I wear under my baggies. Well made and pad is excellent.

Re fit/sizing. Anyone got Endura lycra shorts that come out of the Singletrack's?

The lycra insert is almost as new as I've always found the insert too long mostly aft. Does that make sense? So are 'off the shelf that aren't long at the rear?

Sorry to slightly hijack hora, but those with Howies bibs, how are they in warm/hot weather? Do they hold on to sweat or sag when wet? Does the fact that they are knitted have any detrimental effect?
So many are recommending them, but I'm a bit dubious for summer riding. Reassure me please before I press a 'Buy Now' button.

+1 Plus- the L/XL size of Howies is ok for 6ft2+ riders too?

I got a pair of what I expected to be disposable ones at the start of last winter when I got my turbo. Think I paid around £15 from ali express with <1 week shipping. They are still going strong and I find them perfectly comfortable.

My default answer to this kind of question is simple. Decathlon bibs. The 500 series are pretty good, great if you're on a budget, the 700 and 900 series (same pad on both) stuff is really very good, very comfortable, don't look to hideous and you can pick a pair up for £40 even before you get sale items.

v subjective, but in order of preference for me:

dhb aeron standards - cheap and do the job for me
Endura something or other. Good, but leg grippers a bit tight
Gores - pretty good and durable. Pad not as good for me as the dhb.

Probably go for one of the posher dhbs next.

Sizing. dhbs are right at about 3" above knee. Gores - a bit short - almost mid thigh. Enduras - long and close to my knee.

No problems now and 133 miles last Saturday in comfort, apart from legs and lungs!!!

I'm 6'3", 14st,howies l/xl fit like the proverbial glove. Can't comment on the sweat thing but think someone would have mentioned it by now if it was an issue

Don't scrimp on these - get one really good quality pair and just wash/dry/ride/repeat. Prendas has a range of good value Santini bibs, all decent. Once a decent material and pad has been sorted, it's the leg grippers that seem to make most difference to me comfort-wise and I find that the old style elastic band sewn in with a big long gripper hideously uncomfortable and yet they still seem to be the standard for anything under £70 odd.

My only experience with gel pads suggests that they get horribly sweaty in hot weather, they were Lusso ones too I think.

I used Lusso gel pads, comfortable to start with but after a few years the pad became very flat. Also used the one with a normal Lusso pad but that gets abbrassive when sweaty so no good for long rides.

So, I don't like Lusso shorts much.

Currently have a selection of DHB Roubaix Long bibs,Lusso Roubaix 3/4 length Bibs and a pair of regular length Btwin bibs, all supremely comfortable.

I have used Sportful,cheap decathlon,Cannondale and Altura in the past which have been OK but not as good as the above.

Best ones ever had were some Santini bibs which got destroyed thanks to the dreadful metrolink tracks in Clayton.

As has been said... bibs.

I've had quite a few pairs, Castelli, Santini, Sportful, Endura, Gore, DHB, Rapha. Current favourites are the Endura ones. Pads are all different, fits are all different. Go to a decent shop, try a few on, get the right size, spend a decent amount.

I've got Gore, Giordana and dhb bib shorts. dhb's are beginning to fall apart, Gore's are excellent and have been used by far the most often, but Giordana (Tenax I think the style is) are probably marginally the best.

I do think that there's so much choice out there that whatever brand / style you buy its a bit of a lottery - some people prefer cheaper brands to more expensive brands such as Assos and Castelli (same as bikes really - how do you define 'best'?)
