So daughter fancies an XC hard tail for some training rides and having a bash at some club races.

She's currently got an NS Clash 140mm HT and Vitus Escarpe 275 Full Suss at the moment for trail & bike park duties.

I'm on a budget as not sure how much use it'll get.......

I asked for some advice from one of the other club coaches and he recommended a £2k carbon Scott...... I'm reluctant to spend that for a 13yo who'll have a growth spurt at some point and then have to sell it on for £4.50 & a packet of Haribo.....

I was looking more for something like this TREK MARLIN 8 - which I can add a couple of upgrades too.

It's got Eagle SX which doesn't get favourable views but thinking a 13yo isn't going to bend the cassette which seems common.... I do have a pretty complete XT drivetrain & SLX brakes in the garage doing nothing I could put on it to make it a bit lighter & more reliable - so that's a 'free' upgrade as I can flox the SRAM stuff and the brakes lol

Anything else I could look at on the more budget end (less than £1k) ?

Here you go:

Several here have one and my son - 14 and 5ft 8" on a medium - races & rides one, its impressive for the money.

@krtyton57 I had seen that but she's only 5ft 3in and smallest frame is a medium......

Evans have some great deals on Whyte bikes at the moment.  They have the compact ones as well which may suit.

How about an X-Cal? https://www.pedalon.co.uk/acatalog/Trek-X-Caliber-9-Black.html

There's some Giant, Liv and Scott bikes in budget on the pedalon site also.

Daughter tried an adult medium 29'er at coaching today and it fitted pretty well which surprised me!!

@kryton57 so now looking at the Rapide again - but poss the lower spec one as I have some XT stuff to throw at it 👍

Small or medium Scott Scale alloy off eBay, look for a 950,shouldn't cost more than  £6-700 and they're bloody brilliant. My 11yr old is on a small, he's 5ft in the nose.

He's raced it plenty, won a few as well, rides it like he stole it when he's messing about, cracking bike.
