lakes trip has been cancelled so thinking of doing a two day bike journey somewhere in the south (not too far from Bristol). idea would be to do either a linear or circular two days (train or car out to somewhere to start....ride all day, overnight in a hotel, then ride a second day and home). open to either a road route or mtb route. anyone got any ideas for a trip that suits this?? keen for a couple of big days either on roads with good hills / scenery, bill hills on the mtb....or a more gentle mtb route like the SDW (although not the SDW as it ends a bit far away from me!).

on the road I've done train to Newport, ridden from there over gospel pass, lunch in hay on Wye and on to Hereford for the night. Next day ride back through Symonds yat to Bristol. Only about 80km a day, easily made longer by throwing in some more of the Brecons.

As far as you can manage into the sdw by train
Back via Winchester, then via Salisbury on the king Alfred way to Devizes, then route 4 to Bristol

Dartmoor is plenty expansive enough to make a 2 day off road route and you have direct trains from Bristol to Exeter and Plymouth either end.
