Hi, so it will needs to take
2x 15kg bike....
One long wheelbase bike
Possibly a fat bike....so need to buy spares
Tilts to let dog out
Be robust and have tail light board.
I know nothing about towbars only I have one one new to me car...... Tow bar carrier seems easier than roof rack, less lifting for my back or vertically challenged SO.
Buzzrack scorpion...
Been very impressed with mine (3 years now).
Takes two bikes, designed for ebike weight, works with long wheel base, and will take 29+ (and fat bike with extra bits) tyres.
Folds and is very robust!
I have an older version of this which I have found good for two long bikes but needs an extra kit for a fat bike. The only downsides are it is a little heavy (would help if I stored it closer to the car) and requires a spanner to fit (I keep a ratchet spanner in the boot to make this less hassle)
Edit: Too slow posting, my recommendation is the same as above poster
Thule velo compact, works great and holds the fat bike no problems 🙂
Atera Strada Ebike ML is what you're after. Ours is superb.
What car is this going on?
Do check the towball loading limit - 30kg of bike and 10-12kg of rack.
I go with the cheaper of the Thule racks 9503.
I've tried better and more expensive ones, but that Thule just works.
2 enduro bikes plus an ebike to Alps, no issues
Atera Strada Ebike ML is what you’re after. Ours is superb.
Very much this. Brilliant racks
Ours will be up for sale soon as unfortunately it sits a little close to the rear of our new car/van and we can't open the large tailgate.
Will be replacing it with the latest Atera once they come back into stock as it sitts further out and is designed to allow van tailgates to open.
Thule 970 xpress does all that (except the lighting board, sold separately), is very light, takes a whopping 5 seconds to mount and can be just left in the boot as its so compact. I got mine as a backup for an altea strata dl and it now gets used 95% of the time
Another plus 1 for the scorpion.
Tho also as above, you’re getting weighty there.
I’ve used a Thule two bike rack for over eight years now for collection and delivery of customers bikes and for private use. Seconds to mount, easy to store, locks on, bikes lock on, no shape or style defeated it. Perhaps expensive but will give years of use with spares back up too. Oh, forgot to mention it tilts easily to let my dogs in and out, lights included, easy to swap number plate mounts.
This. Knocks the spots of anything else for ease of everything but stupidly expensive.
Thule Velospace 2. Wider rails so even two 197 hub spacing fatbikes don't rub when loaded. Rated for 60kg
Spendy (but you are only buying it once I guess) but very confidence inspiring when fitted.
Atera Strada Ebike ML is what you’re after. Ours is superb.
+1
I just sold my Thule EuroRide 943 for something with more width between bikes and more wheelbase width.
The bikes on the Thule never came off, but the front wheel would twist in the gutter and could move out if not strapped with additional strap. I would also need lots of padding to accommodate multiple bikes scratch free.
The Atera is rock solid! The bikes do not move an inch and feel relatively solid even without doing up the frame clamp (although of course you would). Its the wheel clamps that do this. Wedging in rather than just clamping down.
I bought the 2 bike, but it comes with 3rd extension, which I thought more practical for me as I dont often carry 3 bikes. I did carry 3 yesterday and to my disappointment, the extension isnt as far away or as wide as the normal slots. It'll mean padding is required for my alps holidays on the last bike. I hope the wheelbase will be ok.
My only issues with it are the clamp to towbar is a bit awkward, not as simple as Thule. But getting the hang of it. The frame ratchet straps are really awkward to undo/loosen. I can feel the strap catching as I pull it out and I suspect they will wear out - dont want this on middle of holiday really. Biggest annoyance is taht you need the key in the rack to remove and to put on. I know its good for security, but it annoys me.
