Here's a challenge for STWers!

Am looking for a replacement for my aged Kona Smoke 29er flat bar commuter. Bought years ago for not much but now mudguard less and running full cast off 9spd XT and a few King and Thomson bits.
Is brilliant for taking the long route home and generally not being in much of a rush.

I think the closest is a Surly Cross Check but I dont like the forks or the non sloping toptube.

So, recommend a steel, 29er/700c flat barred, 61/62cm frame with rigid forks and either cant/v mounts or discs with a dropped toptube or that doesn't look like a gate

Over to you!

Does it have to be steel?

Saw one in the LBS the other day. Looked far better than it should have done!

I think that's a sign of getting old, like leaving the milk in the microwave instead of the fridge.

And smelling of cabbages.

There the 3 main signs anyway.

The Salsa's are drop barred (and I already have a Norco Search gnarrmac).

The tripster ace is getting there.....but needs to be steel and a F&F only.

Its not easy is it!

Tougher! Hmm.

Have you considered a Specialized? 😉 (FWIW, my recommendations are many and varied...! Sometimes, they're good, too! )

this is going to sound daft - but I dont like the fussiness of the Ogre - too many braze ons as it tries to be all things to all men (and women possibly?) and I prefer one or the other brake wise - disc or canti but not both.

I'm sorry but do you actually have a clue what you want?

You have a flat bar hybrid and want a cross check despite the fact the crosscheck has a horizontal top tube, short cyclocross forks and is designed for drop bars all of which you hate. You also don't want other dropped barred bikes that have sloping top tubes. You don't want a swift either because it's too small, despite the fact an XL is bigger in every dimension than a crosscheck due to the fact it's an MTB and designed for flat bars not drop bars and has a sloping top tube you want. 😀

How tall are you, OP? A 61/2cm frame with a dropped top tube sounds pretty big....

You eeally need to compare ett or reach, seat tube length doesn't dictate overall fit.

Especially so since he is confusing road bike with MTB but using the same sizing method on both!!
