I've a few events later in the year where i am going to wearing cycle jersey for more than one day at a time, then possibly have to get on a plane in it to, I realise a 100%  polyester jersey may be the best way of getting a seat to myself on plane, but in the interests of being as least minging as possible, can anyone recommend a lightweight merino jersey, that won't cost earth (under £80-90) not some of the £150 i've seen?

Ideally not a real racing fit either....

Torm stuff will be under your budget. Fits well and doesn't stink.  Give the guys a call if you are unsure about the fit.

Pedal Ed still have a sale on. I like their stuff, and it seems to be well made.

Evans were doing a Kalf one for about £25 last week. I got one, but the fit didn't suit me so sent it back.

Lovely jersey though.

Had a couple of Torm Jerseys and a Shutt and they are OK, then got a Rapha one in the sale.  It's definitely a better made product, so I would say if you can get one in the sale go Rapha.

I'm a big fan of icebreaker stuff, worth checking them out. They'd likely be at the upper end of your budget but money well spent. Also check out Uniqlo if you have a store near by, good value 'fashion' brand that does a lot of merino base layer stuff

7Mesh Desperado is my go to short sleeve jersey for summer months, it's a nice merino/polyester blend and the fit is very, very good. Comes in a nice range of colours and the quality as ever with 7Mesh is second to none. The only criticism I have is the lack of rear pockets and the fact they don't make a 3/4 or long sleeve version, but that is being super, super picky to be honest as it is a great jersey.

Merino might not smell after more than a day of cycling without being washed, but what about you? Assuming you are going to have access to at least some form of facilities for cleaning yourself - whether it's a shower, a river or just a bucket of water - why can't you at least rinse your top at the same time? That will get rid of most of the dirt and sweat. In that scenario, something quick drying would be ideal, e.g. polyester or possibly fine gauge merino.

Depending upon the weather and conditions, it might make sense for that garment to be your baselayer, and have a short sleeve cycling jersey (merino or synthetic) that you can wear on top of it. I would get a Coolmax or similar t-shirt (or possibly a fine gauge merino equivalent), since a t-shirt will be more versatile on its own as casual wear, rather than a dedicated cycling baselayer.

Aware of all the above Slowster, i will be trying to keep myself as clean as possible (mostly to avoid saddle sores) and the plan is to have 2 sets of shorts and two jerseys, but all kit has to be carried on bike for 8-9 days and 20,000m of climbing and fly out of different airport to the one we fly into so cannot leave bike bag or change of clothes at start, so makes sense to have a jersey that isn't going to be minging as much as 100% polyester would be.

Will have a look at all the recommended, thanks all.
