Not cheap cheap, but I've been recently using the Weldtite Citrus stuff and its very good.
Shimano degreaser, under £10 for 1L.
Finishline degreaser works well for me on drive train stuff (the stuff that doesn't come off with a wipe of a damp cloth unlike the bullshit cleaning articles that appear in various bike mags...)
where can you buy pure alcohol (like the stuff from science labs)?
Sefton- IPA from Maplins.
White spirit works for me.
Halfords Bike Hut Citrus which may be the same as the Weldtite stuff. Works much better than Gunk.

If you're going down that route then can I suggest diesel instead?
Much less likely to end with a blazing shed.
