I'm in the market for a new riding pack.
Need around 30l with hydration bladder compatibility and, ideally belt pockets.
Purely for offroad use so no need for laptop sleeves/commuter gubbins.
My Camelbak Mule is very good but they don't seem to do anything suitable in a big enough capacity.
Very much like the look of Osprey and Evoc's offerings so far. Have had a few Osprey bags over the years and found them to be excellent. Are there any others I've missed?
what are you carrying? 30l is massive.
I just got an ortovox freeride. Ok it’s a ski touring pack. But it’s rock solid, doesn’t move due to huge waste band. The slot for avalanche shovel holds a mini pump perfectly, and lots of other features that frankly you want in a biking pack - including a built in back protector, although it’s careful to point out that it’s not designed to protect bike falls.
I got an 18l which is huge, but they come in all sizes, worth thinking about. Only issue I can think is that there won’t be any airflow behind on hot days.

+1
I ride to work with my clothes and lunch in a 12l pack. (No shoes or warm stuff - that's in work already). My 30l bag is big enough for me to carry the above, plus a hoodie, shoes, more food and a waterproof. Way too much gear for a day out on a bike unless I'm planning to stay overnight somewhere.
Carrying group leading kit for long days out so need 1st aid for the group, small toolkit/emergency spares, spare layers, emergency kit, pump, food/snacks for me plus drink.
It all fits easily in my 35l Osprey Raptor but that sits too high so the lid hits my helmet hits my helmet.
Can't fit it in a 20l daysack so figured that something in between would be about right.
The Ortovox Freeride looks good.
Osprey escapist 25 or 32?
Got a 25. Standard well thought out Osprey quality packs.
I used to use a Camelbak Cloud Walker for guiding bike trips. There is also the Rim-runner which is a touch larger.
After my cloud walker eventually wore out I replaced it with an Osprey Centauri. Its not as good, but was pretty cheap.
I bought a bag for bike packing. It had a lid that closed over the top. Going down a technical bit it hit my helmet, that came down over my eyes and when I lifted my hand to move it I went over the bars.
So I changed my bag and bought a similar sized bag but without a lid. It just zips up. Far better. I'll have a look and see what it is
What makes a great walking bag doesn't always make a great biking bag.
Ortlieb Atrack. Got one for a sponsored piece and promptly realised it was pretty much perfect. Adjustable back, waist pockets, waterproof, no helmet bumping, two side pockets and very comfortable to boot.
I carry all of the stuff you do on rides with ease. Not the lightest but I have never noticed it.
Cheers
Sanny
Osprey Escapist 32 here. Designed as a bike pack so it's short and wide, rather than tall and narrow - solving that problem with hitting the back of the helmet. And very well built too.
Another Osprey Escapist here. Group shelter and safety kit in the large bottom half, still enough height for a Mountain Morph pump in the top half; has well placed hip pockets and a small pocket on one shoulder strap for a phone. Last one did many thousands of hard miles before wearing out, so much that the outer had bleached to a very pale blue. Recent replacement like for like has tweeks in some details but seems every bit as good as the original.
