thinking about setting up a singlespeed to give it a go, plus i have a beard and glasses so already two thirds of the way there :D.
don't really want to spend loads so second hand is the way forward, what would be a good second hand cheap frame to look out for? genesis io's look nice, anything else?
Also thinking about rigid forks as will probably be mainly used for winter riding so carbon or steel? are they better or worse than suspension for singlespeeding, mainly ride south downs area.
any pics of what you have already for inspiration would be nice

Pixelmix how are the brake slots on the slot dropout inbreds? The c456 has loads of adjustment for the wheel but only a narrow range for the brakes.

not too bothered by weight, it's singlespeed after all and mainly for winter/local riding.
i think mine is a 19", and i am 5'11" with 31" inside leg. My 456 is an 18" with a 23.7" TT, which is quite long, but with a short stem it steers very nicely, i run a 70mm. i don't actually know what i have on the genesis, it was whatever i had around at the time, but its iro 90mm

My IO is a 19" - I'm just under 5'11". It's just right, even though I've always had 18" bikes in the past.
I have been a singlespeeder for about 10 years and have always used a geared hardtail frame with a tensioner, and a normal back wheel with spacers from an old cassette. That means I only need one bike and when I go on big trips to the lakes, peak etc I can stick the gears back on.
Currently riding a Cotic Soul with 130mm Magura Menja fork.

It's true although I've never found it to be a problem - the amount you need to move the wheel in the dropout to get good chain tension isn't enough to affext the pad/disc contact.

Hi all, don't mean to hijack this thread but what rigid forks are people running and how strong are they? I'm looking at building a rigid but I quite to like to get some air, now I know that there are loads of rigid DJ forks but guessing that they aren't really the right thing for the job! The ones on pixelmix's inbred were the sort of thing that I was thinking but want to make sure that they're built for the abuse!
No pics, but as per BigJohn I've been using a Cotic for the last year. Not the Soul but the 'Simple' which is the same frame but with horizontal drop outs. I literally havent been on my FS for over 9 months now it's that good!
In saying all that I'll be selling the Simple as a partial build within the next 4 weeks if you are interested!? I've decided to join the 29er revolution so upgrading everything!

brilliant frame, i have a Sanderson Life and it is a fantastic bike, the soloist looks really nice as well, if i can find a cheap 2nd hand one may consider it as i love my geared one.
oh yeah the brake is at the top of the disc so a little fore/aft doesn't make a big difference I guess - dunno why I didn't see that before. The OO one has the brake directly between dropout and BB so only takes a few mm movement and your pad/disc aren't aligned.It's true although I've never found it to be a problem
Sizewise I'm 6'2" and ride a 20" c456 with a 50mm stem and I like it, used to run a 20" inbred with 100mm stem, ace for climbing and JRA but a bit hairy on steep downs.

I was pretty happy with those Pace forks. They are a a little bit scuffed here and there but very light and never missed a beat. They are currently lying in the garage as I was thinking I might put them on my wife's bike, but I might be persuaded to sell them if they would be useful.
Regarding 'abuse', you wouldn't want to use them for dirt jumping but I've had the bike round Glentress red/black and Innerleithen and had a bit of air with no issues (I don't tend to fly off the big stuff on any bike though!). I'd happily recommend Pace carbon forks for general trail riding. I found a tubeless tyre upfront (for low pressue) made the bike a lot less tiring on the downs too.

I'm 6ft 2, 33in inside leg. Found the 19 io a bit small compared to my 19 P7, hence why its now my turbo trainer bike.
But enjoyed riding it all the same, especially in the twisty stuff, so would be good for Lordswood.

Had two Inbreds. Loved them. If you can get one, the steel Singular Swift 29er fork works lovely on a 26" wheeled Inbred. I found mine too low with a 440mm (26") rigid. It also ever so slightly slackened the head angle & this really suited it. The 2nd gen Inbred runs great with a 120mm fork, & the 29er fork sits at the same height. Loved my Inbreds. Was holding out for a Ti 29er version, but them like hens teeth. 🙂

I have a 19 inch Genesis Altitude 00 (2008) that I converted to singlespeed last year - after 3 or so years of being geared.
It really comes to life as a singlespeed and is an absolute hoot to ride.
I'm 6 foot tall and have a 29 inch inside leg (Strange, but true)

32:16 It's the golden rule.
Use to run 34/16 or 17t
I went for 24 x 14 on the Gary Fisher for extra clearance. Weighs a bit less too I suppose. Even ground the middle ring bolt holes off and used the granny holes
Had a genesis io [till it got nicked] now got a kinesis decade virsa.
virsa is a tange prestige frame and so much smoother riding than the genesis [reynolds 520 I think, same as on-one frames]
The rigid fork that came with the genesis was aluminium and the harshest thing I've ever ridden. [Benji from the mag said as much when he reviewed it a couple of years back] the rest of the components on the genesis were crap too, stem made of welded scaffolding pipe, making the ride even harsher, wheels had16mm rims and were poorly built, seatpost bent in no time atall.
Still liked it though, but would recommend getting a frame only and building it up with a kona p2 or carbon fork if going rigid. Probably suits a sus fork better though.
older kinesis virsa frames have a very thin seat tube, needed clamp milled out to fit properly and shimmed a little on the inside surface to clamp properly, otherwise it wont clamp up properly and can/will lead to seat tube cracking, [check many posts on here about this] I think the new frames, the ones with tapered headtube have addressed seat tube problems.
The swap outs on the kinesis are very thick/sturdy, and I couldn't stop break squeal/judder through the frame with a qr or bolted qr. the solution [as advised by DMR] was to have a thread tapped into the hollow axle and secure with 6mm bolts, which worked so well I've decided to do it on my other bike as well, not as good as a proper bolt thru maybe, but miles better than a qr or bolted skewer. a no brainer as they say, especially for sliding drop outs.

why is 32:16 the golden rule?
i push quite big gears normally when out riding, have a 34 middle on my current bike so wondering if 34:17 might be a slightly better way to go?

Would 24x14 be about the same as 32x16 given I'm using clown wheels?
Hang on, got a gear app on the phone...
24x14 on 29x2.1 tyres = 49.3 inches
32x16 on 26x2.1 tyres = 52 inches.
So about a 50 inch gear sounds like the norm.
I understand they are the same ratio 2:1 but why would 32:16 be better than 34:17?

The reason I ran 34t was because I had a 34t ring laying around and found the 16t ok for the majority of riding what I did then put a 17t on for place like Wales.
Someone once told me that 34:17 was better than 32:16 from a chain/sprocket wear perspective, ie something about alternate teeth etc. Never really got my head round that.
I went for 32 as the deore ones are cheap as chips and last forever.
Rich, FWIW Ive been running 32:18 at Lordswood this winter, but will go to 32:16 once (if) it drys out.
