My Whyte S-150 has had an annoying click while pedalling for a while now. After yesterday's ride I took the crankset apart to have a look. The crank spindle is really badly scored. I suspect what's happening is the internal cables, which run below the bottom bracket, are distorting the plastic sleeve the axle runs through just enough to rub on the crank axle and its now pretty badly scored as a result.

Its a DUB crankset with so has a 29mm spindle. I think a 24mm axle would sort the problem so the answer is probably Shimano

Realistically what the difference between SLX and XT? Other than some anodizing and £80

IIRC the SLX is actually slightly lighter than XT.

They are great cranks anyway. You'll just need a new tool to fit the DM chainrings.

Drop me a message if you're after 175mm crank arms.

It's hard to look past Shimano. The prices are all over the place with various deals. I doubt anyone can tell the difference when pedalling and they are all robust ime.

Where abouts is the scoring? I had bad scoring on my X01 Dub cranks that were just caused by the shitty DUB BB wearing out after 4 months...

Here's what the current spindle looks like:

null

IMHO a 29mm spindle BB is badly specced for the cable routing on the bike. Had the bike since 2019 though so probably not much come back now

That rubbed centre section on the spindle isnt what is causing the click.

The click will be worn bearings in your BB. Can you check if they run smooth? I think a new BB would fix the problem. I dont think there is a need for new cranks.

Good time to swap to shimano. Just get slx and be done with it.

Yeah, worn dub bb's mean the spindle gets scored. Usually it happens before you realise the bb is worn unless you check everything pre-every ride. Like a special self-destruct design feature.

Im happy to be wrong. I have got to this point in my life by making a great many wrong decisions....

The scored centre part isnt causing a click. Its not got a bearing running on it.

The important part is the part on that spindle where it directly interfaces with the two BB bearings. These are at the ends of the spindle. The central plastic sleeve may cause some friction, but i really doubt its causing a click.

Have i missed something?

As above, remove BB, try to get some slack in the cables that route around it and fit a new BB.

Nothing wrong with that crank.

Usually the bearing surface on the spindle wears aysmmetrically when the bearings wear out or you inadvertantly get a seized bearing. Once this happens the centre of the spindle starts to contact the sleave causing spindle wear in the middle.

You probably are right but I'm not taking any chances. Dub is shite anyway. Its a good excuse to go back to Shimano.

170mm SLX cranks and BB on the way!

Watch the little security torx screws that hold the spider. Mate had three fall out and shimano specify they’re not replaceable so he had to get a new set under warranty.

I believe I saw Merlin had a good deal on SLX cranks
