Bought a set of factory 38's in the CRC sale the other week. Just installed them and had a bounce around, I'm getting quite a loud squelching sound on rebound. Is this normal for this fork? I haven't fiddled with any settings yet, just wanted to see if others have had this noise. Other forks are lyrick charger 2.1 and much quieter.
Yeah my 38s make some strange noises - particularly when working hard - but they perform very well. It does settle down as they bed in if memory serves. I seem to remember being particularly surprised by the noises on the first few rides.
Cheers. I think I might ride them for a bit and see if it settles down. If they stay that noisy it's going to do my head in! Haven't read that they are a particularly noisy fork so got me thinking if something was up with them..
Daughter has been running some for around a year, we had a lower service to check they were right before fitting and they have just had a full service before she left for NZ. No problems with them and no squelching.
Bought another pair in the Chain Reaction Flash Sale a couple of weeks ago. Had a lower service and an air shaft change to 160mm before using them. They seem plush and no squelching so far.
They are as quiet as the Lyriks on my bike
Mine make no noticeable noise. I am running about 90psi and damping almost fully open, if that affects things.
It might be worth doing a lower service. It's a bit more involved that Sram forks and needs a few special tools, but my negative air was packed with grease. Removing this made them much more supple off the top.
Yeah the level of noise doesn't seem right. It sounds like a shock in need of a service... Sounds like it's on the damper side, just on the rebound stroke. Might do a lower service then to see if that helps. Also thought maybe they need to be stood upright to or a while as have been horizontal in a box for a while.
For other people's reference I've just spoken to Silverfish who said if I'm concerned about the noise to send them in and they'll strip them down for me under warranty. Can't complain about that.
I'm always amazed by the potential healing power attributed to a lower leg service. This does nothing more than clean/replace the dust seals and replace the very small amount of lubricating oil. Its worth doing regularly to stop things wearing out but will do nothing to effect the damper or air spring - (which is the source of any squelching noises or poor performance).
To clarify, when I said lower service, I actually meant a full air spring service to investigate the known/common issue of too much grease in the negative spring side.
It won't cure the squelch but if the fork is being stripped to work on the damper then I was recommending checking the air at the same time.
Made a big difference to performance on several sets I've worked on.
Hopefully Silverfish will check this for the OP.
Yeah I hope they'll check the spting too while looking at the damper. Like you say, the noise isn't coming from the spring but no harm in checking grease levels while they're at it as it seems they're often over greased from the factory. I imagine they'll do that.
