Hi all,
New to group and looking for some advice.

I had a broken rear spoke and replaced it but needed to remove the rear cassette. Cleaned everything up, greased and put it all back together.
Went out for a 30 mile ride (canal side and road) with no issues. Hopped on a week later for similar run (need to build up my fitness massively now we can start heading out) and after approx 1 mile started hearing a strange clunking twang type sound. Thought I had something in spokes/ broken spoke but all seemed fine.

Couldn't see any issues , spokes all seem tight, nothing touching etc. Did a quick rebuild and still there. Any ideas?
Short video to illustrate the issue.
Note that it's not a regular sound.

Thanks,
El-d

Is that about once per rotation? New spoke not quite laced properly and catching on cassette somewhere?

Hi there op and welcome to the forum.👍

If the wheel is turned really slowly does it still do it?

I mean to say at such a speed that you can actually see if something is physically making contact?

You'll get some wheel builders on here tomorrow, no doubt, that will know far more then me.

Edit: Note you said it's not a regular sound so that probably means there is not an odd "clearance" issue. I reckon one of the wheel builders on here might narrow it down. Got a pic of the new spoke laced up you could post?

I don't think it's spokes, too irregular and it's unloaded. Wondering about a freewheel pawl- did the freehub come off at all? It's definitely got that drivetrainey noise but obviously most of it's not moving.

That's a horrible noise. I would guess the freehub has failed or axle collapsed. Is the cassette locking fouling on anything?

Brake pad catching on the disc?

If you're sure the spokes are all tensioned and there's no lateral movement in the rim - maybe systematically remove components, then respin the wheel. See if the noise continues without the rotor, caliper, then the cassette, then the tyre. Gradually whittle down to the cause.

Well thats bloody weird! would think it unlikely to be the spokes since its happening unweighted. Its a loud clang right enough.

I'd be taking the cassette off, checking all the pawls are OK and then that free hub is seated properly. Then ensuring cassette back on again properly.

Might be pawls, but then you can hear the free hub buzz and that clang seems completely separate.

🤷‍♂️

Edit: second listen, really does sound like something pinging off the spokes

Pad springs in the brake calliper catching on the disc? I've had that when the pads have got too worn and it's a very similar sound. Drove me mad trying to figure out what it was.

Thanks all. I can't see any contact at all and apart from that clunk, seems smooth enough.
Sounds like the strip back piece by piece is the next step.
Will hopefully get chance sometime this week.

It sounds too clunky to be the brake pad springs, that's usually pingy.

Hi OP - To eliminate the possibility of anything to do with the brake pads, remove them and give the wheel a spin to see if the sound goes or is still there. If it is no longer pinging/clanging then the brakes are your answer. If it's still there then you move on to the next suspected area to inevstigate.

Thanks all for responses.

Finally had chance to relook.

Removed disc brake, still happening. Removed wheel and spun whilst holding it. The hub nut (?) Gives a double kick near end of video. Seems smooth enough before but it gives a slight kick followed by a bigger kick.
Guessing this is an indication that there's issues with the bearings, some crap got in there , slight damage that occasionally catches before breaking free - hence the randomness.

Not the best video I know but I spun the wheel for a while and it does kick randomly with occasional full catch, turn before seemingly coming unstuck.
New bearings/hub/wheel by looks of things ☹️

Thanks all with help in diagnosis.

Bearings. Probably 1 or 2 are currently transforming into little bits of metal from the balls they should be.
