Rear Tyre for gravel style riding

Hi,

I've an old Bizango which I mostly do gravel style riding on around Surrey.

Last week I jumped on the deal for 29x2.6 Ikons and it transpires they are too wide for the rear so I'm thinking of keeping an Ikon on the front but I need something for the rear.

I'm not sure what the deal is with mixing different width tyres so would something like a Racing Ralph 29 x 2.1 work on the rear with a 2.6 Ikon up front?

I saw the Aspen on offer here so wondered is that would work -

I'm after a steer so any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

There isn't an issue mixing widths IME. In fact I ran wider front for many a year.

I've some Saguaros which go on to the MTB if for some reason it's uber dry or some gravel like speed needed. It's like gaining an extra gear - noticeable in accelerating quicker and rolling faster.

Thanks for the reply.

Had a quick look and found these on offer but for some reason they don't look like right as the width is 2.0 and in the Vittoria website there is only one width of 2.5....unless I'm missing something!

I wonder if those are an older version?

Unless they’ve changed the sizing, 2.1 aspens come up pretty slim. I think they’re great tyres but I’d get the 2.25 or even the 2.4 if you can find one for sensible money

They are blatantly cheap OEM equivalents or very old, TNT is the grey and black sidewall I think and wouldn't be retailing for £14.99!

If you do mean gravel or off piste most of the year, not off camber mud slogging, then go for a wide, near slick. Grip isn't a gravel issue. I use Hutchinson Overides. Both tubeless and non tubeless go up tubeless easily.

Buy whatever racy XC tyre around 2.3 you can find cheap.

If you're just riding gravel then you should find that fine.

FYI a racing Ralph is more of a fast front tyre. The fast rear companion of the racing Ralph is the Rocket Ron. I have this combo at the mo, I like them.

I've got the Terreno XC tyres in 29 X 2.1".

Hilariously fast in places but you need to adjust your cornering and braking a bit! Although if you're running a bigger more aggressive front tyre probably not...
