Rear suspension : Rock Shock Deluxe Ultimate - need volume reducers?

Having used my 161 in Morzine during my recent weekend, overall it performed absolutely brilliantly ( well, until I came off and fractured my scaphoid - but not the bike's fault).

The rear suspension handles significantly different to my FlareMax (not surprisingly - but even with a TF Tune to the CC rear, the rear suspension rarely, if ever, gets to bottoming out).

I don't to much air - as I am useless at it, but okay at riding berms and all the other features that Morzine as on the more sedate stuff.  The Privateer uses up all its travel - which is good .  The rear shock is running about 250 psi ( I weigh about 107 kgs).

Being effectively one handed until I get out of a cast, I can't take the shock apart - but can I assume that adding volume reducers would allow running slightly less pressure for the same travel?

Obviously, I will need to find out how many are in there first ( bike was 2nd hand)

It would.

But why do you want to? There are trade-offs of less pressurise to be aware of e.g. more comfortable but loss of support in berms.

My amateur approach would be to set pressure for the desired ride feel, then add volume spacers to deal with jumps and drops.

sorry to hear about your shoulder. they thought makes me shudder

anyway, are you talking about the shock on the cotic or the privateer?

if the cotic and you want more travel,  try reducing the HSC

if you’re talking about the privateer and it’s second hand, has the shock been serviced? it could be using up easily its stroke because the oil is tired or the seal on the IFP has blown

or do you want to the suspension to feel softer, but to not bottom out any easier?

Non-stealth ad - if you need a service kit when you come round to pulling it apart, I've got one I'll let go cheap. My son bought he wrong kit and I never got around to returning it.
As far as the reducers, the son only felt the need to add them when he started hitting the big stuff.

I have the same shock (on a different bike) but the opposite issue. I have the sag set for 30% but regularly blow though the travel and was thinking of adding tokens to ramp up the spring rate towards end of stroke.

What are you hoping to achieve in terms of how the bike feels?

^ the answer to that is that when I do get back on the bike , I hope to learn how to jump (better).  Hence the rear suspension will take a bigger hit, so may bottom out (more often).

That said, I do need to check what is in the air can first

Also check which air can you have. The older ones take the red volume spacers + gnardog. The newer ones which come with linear or progressive cans take the purple ones (or copies of)  only.

I am guessing the old ones as it is on a 2021 Privateer 161

But thanks
