Hi guys I have a fox rear shock that's 216x63 I'm trying to find an sls spring that fits but it seems they are hard to find at that travel. Can I fit a spring with 67mm travel or will that cause issues? Thanks as I'm new to coil shocks!
I'm new to coil shocks too so dont have an answer for you, but I was confused about which whether the progressive cane creek spring would fit my shock, I emailed J-Tech and they replied quickly and helpfully
A spring with more travel is fine, as long as it physically fits onto your shock body (the "free length" - the overall length of the spring is the measurement you're worrying about there).
67mm sounds right, you'l have a few mm to spare, even allowing for 1-2mm of preload, you wouldn't want any shorter than that.
Nukeproof have some affordable light springs on CRC, Cane Creek VALT are also light weight and come in smaller sizes. As above, good idea to verify they'll fit your shock first, some brands vary a bit.
It's ok for the spring stroke to be slightly higher than the shock stroke so you'll be fine with the 67mm SLS. If the spring stroke is less than the shock stroke it can be a problem, as it will become coil bound under hard compression limiting the performance of the shock.
I have a Marzocchi Bomber shock with 65mm stroke and I was running the same 67mm SLS spring for a while before I swapped for a lighter one.
Thanks guys for the advice. Learn something new everyday! Much appreciated 👍👍
Keep an eye out for second hand springs on ebay. They can be very cheap and its a good way to experiment cheaply with different spring weights.
