My Fox Float DPS Evol shock is long overdue a service (5 years!) and having just had frame bearings and shock mounts changed I’m noticing stiction in the shock, so looking at a service. Buy a kit and give it a simple home service or get it overhauled by a pro? If the latter, which one? BTW, it’ll be getting a decent workout in Morzine in July so want no issues when out there

This

BTW, it’ll be getting a decent workout in Morzine in July so want no issues when out there

Plus this

long overdue a service (5 years!)

Is only one of these

Buy a kit and give it a simple home service or get it overhauled by a pro?

(a) it's not just a quick lube of seals and some oil in the can at this point, it's a full damper strip & if you were happy doing that you wouldn't be asking about a shock with 5 years on it since a service
(b) if it's not been touched in 5 years I'd be getting it looked at properly anyway if it dying was likely to significantly inconvenience me & I'm happy doing most of this stuff myself, I would/I do get a service kit and do it properly once a year or so, flush the damper etc.
(c) there's a first time for everything and prior to a big holiday probably isn't it, you've got plenty of time to put it right if you get it wrong of course but what it will cost will depend just how wrong you get it.

I would suggest doing it yourself at some point after you have it serviced and after the holiday mind.

Worth noting a full service kit isn't significantly cheaper than a proper service, it adds up for sure but you'll need the oils etc to do the damper and whilst it's not complicated it can be a bit daunting and potentially require tools you don't have. (FWIW I'm really not convinced the nitrogen charge etc is in anyway important outside of "doing it properly" YMMV of course)

Also it's only January and you're not going until July, are you new here? SOP is to wait until a day before the holiday, order the service kit on a next day service then email the CEO screaming your displeasure and demanding compensation when it doesn't arrive by 9am forcing you to cancel your holiday as you can't get the bike sorted in time to pack it and fly at 3pm

I was gonna write that answer above too ☝️.

For god sake send it off to a specialist and be reminded of what it’s supposed to feel like when you get it back!

A quick service in a rear shock is really easy but after 5 years it needs a full service. Get the full service then learn to do the quick service for next year.

I recently opened up a shock for a friend who had never serviced it.
The aircan was full of muddy water and the damper was blown.
It was in the middle of a riding holiday and an odd sized shock, so I filled it with lots of marine grease to slow it down a bit and get through the rest of the week.
A regular 1/2 hour aircan service would have helped prevent this.

Aircan service is straightforward and should be done regularly.
The damper not so much.
IIRC Fox need a nitrogen filling needle and plug.
Rockshox 'can' be fully rebuilt at home but I'd prob leave it to a pro.

Given it's Feb now and you're going away in July, I'd expect a pro service now and a couple of home air can services before you go depending on how much riding you do.

No reason the air can shouldn't be done as often as the fork lowers. You do drop the fork lowers don't you?

Where are you? You might have a local-ish service place.

I take mine to Slick & Slide in Macc, but there are plenty of other good places and it's easy to use post for a rear shock.

Obviously your friends advice for a full service wasn't good enough 😉🙂

In terms of who to use, Slick & Slide are always my first port of call. J-Tech after that But you could try Recoil as well?
