I've been having issues with rear shifting.....  9 speed cassette...... When shifting there's almost a delay .... It shifts somewhat slowly and imprecisely but only in a certain gear range

so eg it's fine except for 4 th / 5th... Various combinations of tightening and loosening the cable adjuster can move that up or down a gear...... But the extremes of the cassette shift perfectly.

The hanger looks straight and I've fitted a new cable but to no avail !

any ideas ?.

How old's the chain & cassette?  How do the jockey wheels look?

They are all in good condition.  Little use.   Less than 1000 clean easy miles

The hanger looks straight

But is it straight? My first action is always to check (and correct) with the proper tool. It can save hours of faffing.

Shimano or SRAM? The latter (especially the cheaper stuff) is known to go sloppy quickly.

How old is the cable and inner?  Did you replace at the same time as cassette?

Either the pivots on the mech are loose and it's wobbly (and if that's the case, you must run SRAM), or the hanger is bent.

My money's on the latter.

I’d say bent hanger too - there’s no way you can tell if it is straight by eye.  Invest in a proper alignment tool - you will use it more than you ever thought and it will make a difference...

I've just swapped out a perfectly straight* hanger due shifting issues.

*by eye
