Hi
Just wondering if it is possible to change rear QR dropouts to accommodate Thru axle?
Does anyone attempted something simillar?
Bike KHS BNT 29 steel frame.
I imagine it's possibe, but only a matter of time and £££.
Thanks
Karogali
As your frame is steel, it should be possible but likely that it's welded construction so not as simply as sweating out the old drop-outs and brazing in new ones. Expect that the cost, plus respray would be prohibitive in comparison to buying a suitable used frame.
It’d need serious frame surgery unless it’s got modular dropouts,.
Do DT still make a 10mm TA which would work?
Or, assuming it's a 135mm QR dropout you could use a Hope bolt in hub.
What do you want to gain?
Check out the 10mm through axles. I use a Superstar one in my QR framed hardtail
Bike frame is in XXXXL size or what ever 🙂 It is a really big frame. I am 6'9'' tall and weight just short of 200 lbs. There is so little bikes for a tall persons, if you find used one its probably a road bike anyway.
Reasons why I want to consider changing dropouts to thru axle:
Rear wheel came loose while descending Pottato alley in Peaks District
While towing child trailer rear wheel sometimes slightly goes off its place in dropout.
considering replacing wheel set with more durable hubs more options only when I go to thru axle
Yes it is 135 QR hub.
What QR is it? Start by replacing it with a Shimano skewer. They are a lot better than anything else. If it is already Shimano then it's time for plan b
It does sound like you need a shimano QR.
Your numbers aren't that spectacular to be stressing a prop QR done correctly.
I read this thinking.... "You need a Shimano QR,". Then see other people suggested the same. I'd do that.
If all qr manufacturers made QRs even half as good as Shimano we wouldn't need most of the through axle guff these days.
For a more secure wheel you can rebuild a shimano qr hub with a solid threaded cromo axle for less than a tenner and use gert big nuts.
Or a Hope hub with 135 mm bolted axle as mentioned above (M10 socket cap bolts each end).
I run both those options in horizontal dropouts without chain tugs - absolutely no slippage
If that still slips (I really doubt it) then the Hope option could be used in conjunction with modified dropouts as they don't need the "dropout" slot (would work with a closed 10mm hole so could have some inserts brazed in).
Got a photo of the dropout? We once had a Trek frame warrantied where the slot was very shallow, so clamp faces of axle end / qr were half unsupported allowing the wheel to work loose.
Denied there was an issue but the next year's model used the same dropout but they'd modified the forging die to deepen the slot....
Even better than a Shimano qr is a DT Swiss rws, I run one on my 4x bike as it has horizontal dropouts, I used to have some issues with the wheel slipping but not any more.
Salsa or Shimano QR as mentioned above
Will your hub convert to 10mm thru axle? If so, that might be a way forward. I used to run Hugi 10mm axles with Hope hubs on standard QR frames.

This. The DT Swiss RWS 10mm axle works really well now that they've made the handle out of metal rather than swiss cheese. It fits with standard drop-outs and, ime, does a decent job of adding a little stiffness out back. As above, assumes you can convert your rear hub to a 10mm through axle spec, straightforward with both Hope and DT Swiss.
Edit: this thing

Hub is KT Shimano type, not convertible to 10mm throu axle
First step ill try to fit Shimano QR skewer. Failing that an option new 10mm throu axle hub and TIG or MIG weld the drop out gaps to create 10mm hole (might need some filing after that to create perfect hole).
I know could run HOPE hub with 10mm axle, does anybody know is there an option for DT SWISS 350 hub to be secured with DT Swiss RWS 10mm axle.

Yes, dt swiss 350 hub & 10mm novatech axle in a std 135mm frame here
HWGXXX0001803S that the part number of the adapters to convert rear Shimano rotor DT SWISS hub into 10mm Thru axle
