I quite like the look of the Fat Albert front ,as a high volume front and rear fun winter combo as I have to ride roads and gravel trail to get to the lovely land of mud so would want a tyre that looks like it can roll well and still perform in the mud.

Minion DHR2 3C

I ride mostly wet muddy trails for the vast majority of the year. I've yet to find a tyre that can cope as well as the minion on everything from dry right through to deep mud. For at least 10 of the last 12 months its been paired up with a michelin wild mud up front. It makes for an awesome combination

Geax datura, incredibly fast rolling on tarmac for a mud tyre and very good in mud and on roots, TNT spec dirt cheap at on-one last time I looked, last well too as will be using mine from last year when it gets messy here in the midlands

What do you plan to do with it? Muddy XC is a pretty different job to muddy #enduro frinstance, I like the dhr2 but my mud mostly happens on the way down, I don't worry too much about clawing through flat mud as a good XC mud has to do. Whereas a traditional spiky xc mud tyre doesn't have the grip or volume for other stuff that the DHR2 is great at. Horses for courses.

Sometime if it's really really wet and muddy (sloppy stuff) I'll run a Shorty on the rear but 95%+ of my winter riding is:

Rear: Minion DHR2 3C
Front: Shorty 3C

Thanks for the reply's guys, I'm going to keep the MM on the front as its very predictable but reading the reviews on the DHR2 3C sounds good for the rear. Does it come with EXO casing or DD yet

DHR2 on the back here too, only dual compound though, not 3C.
Yes, it does come in EXO/DD although DD isn't widely available yet:

What's the difference between 3C and dual compound other than price?

Stickier basically- adds a softer compound on the edge. It does roll a bit slower and wear a bit faster than the dual but you get more grip on wet slippy stuff. Not sure i know which I prefer, on the back.

Uh, only criticism I have is that they're a little delicate. That saves weight obviously but they could do with being a little tougher, for the job they do. Butcher Grid might be a good alternative if you need more sidewall protection

(@danti, I can't get into my email just now, I'll catch up once I get in!)

Votchy,I too loved the Daturas for the same reasons as you but alas no 650b version and now a discontinued design. So that is what got me intrigued when I saw the very similar tread pattern on the new Fat Albert Front with the added bonus maybe of the softer compound( although I'm sure this will make them wear quicker) and the other downside is the Schwalbes aren't £15 a pair !

EXO sidewalls suck in my opinion!

I replaced a Butcher/Slaughter Grid combination for High Roller 2s Front & Rear and managed to destroy my rear rim in two rides - I was running 28-30psi tubeless.

Its a shame as the 3C compound is grippy as hell and they go up easily tubeless.

Go for the DD casing unless your super smooth or not that aggressive!

If anyone wants a pair of 2 ride old HR2s let me know!

Yah, the EXO is cut resistant but has no real support. I like how that feels tbh, very supple but you can't be a rim dinger.

I need something a bit more aggressive on the back too, trail boss doesn't brake too well on Ae off piste stuff. I want to retain the bomb proof casing that WTB offer, so it looks like a Vigilante could be the one.

I'm a big bugger, and have been super impressed by the Tough fast casing sidewalls thus far.

Try a Baron Projekt if you're a rim dinger. I really like the Apex sidewall compared to Exo sidewalls. Seems that's not universal though - tyres seem to be very subjective!

Michelin wild mud Enduro spec, bit heavy but clear well, grip and no punctures even though run at silly pressures on the South Downs.

Wish Maxxis did the Beavers in 27.5 x 2.3, I like the performance just would like a bit more volume on the rear (hardtail).

Are beavers a good option for both front and rear? Time to get rid of the now hated Hans Dampfs on my 29er and I have two large beavers in the loft. *s*****
