Hi all, pulling what's left of hair out.

Caught the last mech on a rock sending it into the spokes so got the wheel repaired, bought a new mech, chain, cassette, mech hanger, and treated it to new cables/outers.

Fired them onto the 5 and went to set up the mech, discovered only 7 clicks from the 9speed shifter. Got a new shifter, and I'm able to shift from 9th gear to 3rd gear. If I tighten the cable, I lose 9th gear and get 2nd gear. I can also shift to 1st gear if I push the mech so the stops are ok. Whilst enough slack to drop into the 9th gear it clicks to 8, stutters and doesn't move to 7, then the next click to 7, then click to 6, then misses the next shift, until I runout of clicks at 3!

The kit is as follows
9spd slx cassette
9 SPD SRAM pc971 chain
10spd slx shadow mech, last one was the same
9spd xt shifter
New orange 5 mech hanger

What am I doing wrong?

Not wanting to state " The Obvious.", but a 10sp mech on a 9sp system is going to give you those problems as the cable pull ratios are different.

Didn't the last time. Have they changed them since 2013 when I got my last 10 SPD six mech?

I'll stick my neck out and say your last 10sp SLX mech was actually a 9sp.

Nah, waiting for wiggle to tell me as its off their system being 2013, but having decided on a 10spd, I recall the thoughts, but I'm being told they nay have changed their ratios

I shall also stick my neck out. There has been no ratio change gordonb. 10 speed Shimano MTB stuff has always had the same cable pull ratio, which is to say, different from 9 speed. If you were indeed using a 10 speed SLX mech before, then your gears definitely weren't working properly. You need a 9 speed mech, or your gears will continue to not work properly. Sorry.

Easy to see the difference too,9sp has the cable housing stop butted up close to the dog-bone pivot, 10sp stop is on an extension arm about 1/2" away.

Fit a 9spd mech and your problems will go away.

Or at a billion to one you've somehow managed to get the cable wrapped round something it shouldn't be wrapped around inside the shifter.

Been out to look at the old mech, it does look like a 9spd as described by coatesy.....
