This is all Shimano...

9 and 10 speed road are compatible.

9 speed road shifters work with 9 speed mtb mechs.

So theoretically, 9 speed mtb shifters should work with a 10 speed road mech yeah?

Has anyone done this and can confirm it works. I can get a cheap 10 speed tiagra mech which will cover a 11-32 cassette for a bodge job on the 456 🙂

Ah yes - I didn't see that bit. It works cable-pull wise. You could fit a 12/27 road cassette?
