So my current moon shield has started playing up and won't hold a charge any more.

I'm looking for ideas on what's good with rear lights !

Any suggestions

Thanks.

I’ve a moon nebula, and a couple of Hope districts, plus a fibre flare on my helmet. All have been fine, and not been knocked off yet, touch wood.

Like my Moon Nebula. It’s in its 2nd winter of commuting and still going strong.

Supplemented it with a CRC Lifeline light that was just over a tenner. That’s not too bad either - although the battery light isn’t a patch on the Nebula.

I've had two Moon rear lights fail on me in the past few years - first a Nebula and now (just in the past couple of weeks) a Comet-X. Needless to say I won't be buying another Moon light! I have a little Lezyne Zecto rear which is still going strong after about 6 or 7 years of regular use so I would recommend Lezyne over Moon any day of the week.

Edit: I should also add that neither of the Moon lights lasted more than 2 years

Maybe it helps that I’ve got a rear mudguard on my racer so the Nebula doesn’t get covered in crap / water etc. It still looks like new despite being used for commuting 2-3 days a week all year round generally.

them ones with a simple clip and cost 2 quid from cheapo shops (wilkinsons, Tesco, Pundland, BnM etc) get two of them and put them on your camelbak straps with a bit of gorilla tape round the bottom of the clip. I haven't been run over yet.
but you go ahead and spend 30 quid if you want. 🙂

Moon Nebula, cheaper than when I bought it https://www.merlincycles.com/moon-nebula-rechargeable-rear-bike-light-85851.html

Smart lunar of some sort.

Small, bright, range of flash options, can be mounted on seat post, seat stay or belt clip, cheap enough to have several, take AAA batteries so if they do go flat any garage or shop will have some available. I've never had a smart light fail in over 20 years.

Actually that's a lie, the first 7led one from about 20years ago died last year after serving on road, mtb and commuter through its life.

I replaced my old Lezyne Micro Drive when the battery wouldn’t make it through the week anymore after over three winters of daily riding. The Exposure Flare I replaced it with has been great: small, bright and reliable. Bit of a pain getting at the charge port first couple of times and if you didn’t reseat the silicone band correctly it could get the guts soaked, but used as designed it has been fine.

Hope district if running a battery pack isn't a problem for you.

Yeah the Nebula is good on low, unless you're riding into the sun then perhaps the high setting might be of some use.

Very happy with my Exposure Blaze. I run it on the medium setting as I'm actually worried the brightest may dazzle other road users!

Bontrager Flare R. USB rechargeable, better than an Exposure Blaze and half the price (I have both...). Has an ambient sensor so brightens in the day and dims at night.

glowing (see what I did there) review here, chimes with my experience

https://www.cyclingweekly.com/reviews/lights-reflectives/bontrager-flare-r-rear-light

and is usually available for around 30 quid (Sigma Sport etc).

Ive been using the Flare R as above, but prefer my new Exposure TraceR as the flare does seem to struggle to stay sealed in the wet.

Moon comet & comet X failed in 2 years , the x is 5 month old so will get warranty. My smart lunar 2.0 let water in between the lens & body , treated it with Quicksilver liquid neoprene & it's on it's 4th highland winter 👍

Hope district, exposure red eye (connected to Revo front) and bontrager flare r here. All have been great. Love how compact the flare r is and you can turn off the light sensor so that it is super bright at night as well as during the day.

(Actually, mine is the newer flare rt, not the one linked to above)

I lost my moon shield after years of service. Replaced it with an Exposure Trace R. So far so good. Augmented with an Aldi strip light copy.

Exposure TraceR for solid light and a Knog Chippy for flash.

I have 4 of each and the TraceR lighrs are maybe 3 years old.

I love that the Knog sits flush with the seapost, can be charged anywhere without needing a cable and blends seemlessly with the bike. The TraceR fits nicely under the seat.

I did have a Hope District, but it’s far too bright on any setting. No one in a car following behind you will be able to place you on the road, they’ll just be blind and trying to overtake. Stupid light.

Another +1 for the moon nebula. Mine is about 4 years old and still works as well as the day it was bought. The thing that impressed me was how well engineered it feels, and also comes with all the mounts you may need, including my preferred under the saddle mount.

see.sense Ace. It’s Ace. and the added “crash alert” (it will text a contact if I crash) is a big bonus for me... check my thread history if wondering why!
Even without that its a superb, bright, handy little light.

I'm on my second Comet. I like the function, but battery didn't hold up with the first one. Will see how No'2 goes.

Still bloody bright for the money

Or if you want usb charging I had one like this off ebay a couple of years ago, Still going its pretty bright, good runtime (it's got a lower output mode to help) seems quite weather tight...
