I’m at my wits' end here. My Hope Pro 4 rear hub (6 months old) has started making a horrible grinding noise whenever I freewheel. It’s not constant, but it’s getting worse, and it sounds like something's chewing itself apart inside.
I’ve already:
-
Stripped it down and cleaned everything
-
Re-lubed with the right stuff (as far as I know)
-
Replaced the bearings (they were gritty)
-
Checked the freehub for wear
Still no joy. The sound is back within a ride or two. Almost like metal-on-metal. And yes, everything is torqued to spec.
Could it be a dodgy ratchet mechanism or just poor QC? Or am I missing something obvious here? I’d really rather not drop another £200 on a new hub, but I also don’t want to get stranded halfway up Helvellyn again.
Give Hope a call, they're excellent at sorting stuff out. Even if there's something dramatically wrong with the hub, I'm assuming, at 6 months old, they'd just replace it?
I know you've got the wheel rebuild to consider but an email or call to Hope is the first place I'd start.
Had this, new bearing in hub at ratchet side cured it. Did you refit the thin washer?
Yeah definitely contact Hope, they will sort it especially at six months old.
I’ve no idea how it would have gritty bearings after six months, they’re really well sealed. I’ve had mine a few years now and took it through all kinds of crap and jet washed and the first time I stripped it to check it everything was still clean and water free and the original grease still present.
