Using 9 spd XT shifters with Deore LX rear mech. Chain and cassette still got good life left, but...
The rear shifter can only JUST get to the lowest gear position. It's a real push, and sometimes it pops out on its own into 2nd lowest, taking the chain with it. Very annoying. What do I need to adjust? The 'L' screw on the rear mech??
Also, the rear mech is pinging forwards in the lower gears. This sometimes makes it skip gears, but jumping around forwards and backwards. What the what?
Possible cable issues, or limit screw.
yes could be to do with the L lower limit screw especially if you are putting a lot of force on the lever with no result, try unscrewing the L stop a bit and see if it helps.
if not start again:
undo the cable
set the H limit screw so that the derailleur runs perfectly inline with the highest gear (without the cable attached)
attach the cable and pull finger tight, screw up the cable holder.
run down through the gears and set the L lower limit screw so that it allows the chain onto the lowest gear but not over into the spokes.
if the gears are sluggish going down the gears-add tension to the cable
if the gears are sluggish going up the gears-let off some tension
