Changed my gear cables a few months back they have worked fine on dry rides for months, I went to Gisburn in fog and rain for 3 hours and the rear gear cable system is so clogged its next to useless.
I'm running an XT 2008 rear mech (non-shadow). When I change the bit of outer cable nearest the mech it sorts the problem.Do the old style rear mechs with the bit of curly outer cable collect more s***e than the newer shadow designs?
My question... Would buying a shadow mech eliminate this problem?
Does anybody else have such problems?
Please advise - its really putting me off riding in the wet!

Have you got a rubber booted ferrule on the chainstay end of the short cable or just an open one? Any water in a cable will cause friction. Just put a set of XTR cables with the boots on ( included in the kit) and it will be fine.

Spray WD40/GT40/alike something in every so often and push the crap out when it starts to play up
it used to be that the standard red pipe with WD40 was a perfect fit. Some I've had more recently they've changed it. May require a little file work
4mm for gear cable normally. (5mm for brake)
Position them along the outer where the cable normally contacts/rubs the frame and they'll make good anticable rub bumpers as the o-rings sit proud
Slide the outer and wipe the inner after wet rides.
IME boots still allow water in, but don't let it out.
Rock and roll cable magic when you fit new cables, decent ferules to keep the rubbish out. Beware of the real cheap inners as these can be more prone to rusting/jamming than better quality inners. If you can then go for full length outers and this will reduce the water ingress points. I get years out of my gear cables, the front Gore ride on has been on for 5 years.

I have tended to run a full length outer cable up to the mech and do away with the exposed cable & the little bit of short outer as it just picks up all the mud etc. This way you can keep it well lubed & protected. I just get some small black zip ties & attach it to the cable lugs. Job done.....slick shifting!
full length outer and some very thin grease or engine oil down it before fitting (unless already greased, but I'd still put some extra at the dirty end)
I've wondered about fitting an oiler about six inches up from the bottom but haven't tried it
