It appears an odd one this, and something I've never had happen before.
When pedalling, the chain returning to the cassette is dropping off the side of the lower jockey wheel and trying to wedge between it and the cage.
The tension pulls it through the then it sort of rides back onto the teeth then repeats.
Clearly not right and runs the risk of pulling the cage off .
I'm running 1x10 slx long cage rear mech.
The jockey pulleys do seem to have a lot of play in them so I wondered if it was them but a hardly used xt mech on a daughters bike seems to have roughly the same amount, unless that is goosed too.
If it's new jockey wheels, anyone have any suggestions for aftermarket or just stick with shimano?

new jockey wheels would be my intial thought. I had the same problem, no other issues you can see? then swap em out.

Nothing else obvious, this winter northern grit/mud/grinding paste takes no ruddy prisoners on drivetrain....

Had that happen when the mech cage was worn. It seems quite tight on tolerance.

If it helps the pain, I had it happen on a brand new XTR mech after one race at sherwood in the snow. Nice.

Is the cage straight? Put the chain in the middle of the cassette, clamp the lower part of the cage with an adjustable spanner, centrally over the jockey wheel bolt, and twist the cage left and right a bit and see if there is a position where the chain stays on while turning the cranks. If so twist it so it stays adjusted.
