On my Felt Surplus 650B plus hard tail the rear boost axle screws directly into the frame i.e. not into a captive nut arrangement which can be easily replaced if stripped. Is this normal for boost rear axles?

Pretty normal for any rear axle tbh. The thread will be pretty chunky and you shouldn't be swinging off it, so thread damage shouldn't be a problem

Conversely all of my bolt through axles go into a threaded insert that's two 148x12's and one 142x12.

You sure it doesn't screw into the replaceable gear hanger?

This definitely just screws directly into the frame and it's a fine thread so easily stripped especially as it screws in to tighten i.e. not a lever cam style.

Thanks Steve, likewise all my non boost axles screw into a captive threaded insert of some sort but this is my first boost width bike and I thought they were maybe all like this.

My Spesh boost screws directly into the frame. It has a fine thread as this is stronger than course and less likely to come undone.
