iv been thinking about going single speed and cant see any benifits, e.g. With gears you can go up and downhill, single speed you cant do either etc. etc.

are there any single speeders out there who can convince me?

there is at least one thread of this ilk every week!!!

i went for my 1st ss bike around 3 weeks ago, its ace for fitness and line choice, and is good fun/different. i dont really subscribe to the whole 'it doesnt need cleaning etc thing as i clean all of my bikes regularly anyway'

try it 1st and see if you like it.

See if you can borrow one for a couple of rides. They aren't for every one but also I think you have to give it a go.

if you do go for it and master it, beat it, crush it . . . . make it look easy . . .

Then what?

World domination, . . . . very dangerous game.

Stick to gears.

I don't find 27 gears is enough - too many ratios but not enough spread 🙁

singlespeeding is the truth! Do not be tempted by these other gear based ways of life, that way lies weedy un-manly thighs and madness.

If you use gears to make hills easier why not flatten them or straighten the wibblywobbly bits to make it easier too?

Come the church of singlespeed we will welcome you with open arms and a nice beer.

Once you are in the inner circle you will learn the screts of the universe or at least what the belly button fluff fairys' secret agenda is and how to build a life size doppleganger using nothing but dairy products.

No, I get to the top of the hill and just don't know how to get back down.....

Normally have to resort to the downlift.

It's just another option on a bike.

Loved my bmx single speed as a kid went everywhere on it with pals on similar bikes.

Through suffering comes enlightenment. You either get it or you don't BUT it is no coincidence singlespeeders tend to be real men. Come to the Keilder 100 and watch us make geared boys cry as we beat them with our rigid ways

It works well here in suffolk/norfolk really well (deep mud and no monster hills near by) having one gear here is good in winter, As its harder to clog up one gear than a 8/9 speed drive. It does make you work harder if you want it too its marmite love/hate thing you ever like it and live it or hate it and curse it as. 😯

I always saw singlespeeders as 'look at me! look at MEEEEEEE!!!!' types. Much like 29ers and tandems. Basically all clown bikes.

Funny I always thought the "look at me" types are the fat boys on oingly boingly bikes in body armour at trail centres where they have an audience rather than ss riders who normally do their own thing. Isn't bias a funny thing 😀

coogan - well actually I was in that London today, and the sheer number of fakengers on fixies wearing their sister's jeans was astounding.

SS is great though, I ride mine far too much at the expense of geared bikes, but it's far more reliable and cheaper to repair when you break it.

Make one up cheap as you can

If you like - build better

If you don't - no great shakes

I've been SS for about 6 years - selective rides

Horses for courses..................

Just do it - no point asking...... be your own man/boy/girl/woman (delete as needed)

singlespeeding- you hear strange things about it. Those that have singlespeeds seem strangley different. The first time singlespeed happens to you it feels so wrong, worrying and yet inevitable and apparently it makes men out of boys.

It's basically puberty with one gear.

I think Mr Kingtut you will find that practically all topics have been discussed before however not everyone with a user name skulks round on here waiting to poo poo any debate, mostly it's you.

Are you related to any of these two perchance?

NO point in it I don't like it. Too hard up hill (granted if I was fitter it would be easier) and too spinny DH. It limits the fun I had on that bike its gears for me in the future.

Do singlespeeders frequent less hilly areas? Most of the rides round here involve a minimum of 1,000ft climb, often requiring the granny ring for my old and feeble legs. I just don't get the attraction of not being able to ride up stuff that gears make doable.

You do all realise that there is NO SUCH THING as a Singlespeed MTB. When MTBs were invented they took a single-geared beach cruiser, put gears on it and rode it into the mountains. Therefore there can be no point... 😉

In this country we were riding in the mountains on single speed, often fixed bikes, long before the Americans invented the idea.

So it's really a case that gears (and suspension) haven't caught on with some of us yet 🙂

If you're interested look at the Rough Stuff Fellowship history.

I wouldn't even get out of bed for that sort of ride. All singlespeeders are riding gods, you're not allowed to ride SS until you're pure and strong enough to do it properly. And most people can't. There's a secret club and everything, but obviously normal people are oblivious to the fact, being a bit thick and all. Riding SS makes you smarter, stronger, sexier and above all else, better. There are bosses of huge corporations that are singlespeeders and they still let on to singlespeeders who are a bit shit, not that any are, all of us are hugely succesful, it comes with the turf. I have a million pounds in the bank but I come here to poke fun at people with gears, the stupid ****ers.

Dream on weak kneed, geared fuzzballs, you'll never be the men that we are so just kill yourselves. Sorry, got to go, two girls from the John Lewis perfume counter have just called by asking if they can give me head.

1000 ft of climb? Barely a warm up! Mind you there were quite a few folk on SS at teh 'puffer and many of them did better than me with my granny gears!

I guess tho that most SS riders don't go into the hills much. You certainly don't see SS riders very much in my local hills -and they are hills not mountains. Still a couple of thousand feet in a decent ride tho
