OK, so im trying to remove the crank from my road bike to replace it, ive got the non drive crank arm off, but i cannot for the life of me get the drive side out. It appears that it should simply pull out, but it will not budge. Am i missing something or should i just MTFU and hit it harder?
Im not changing the bearings BTW, theyre fine.
They can be quite tight. Get it started by holding a block of wood over the non-drive side end of the axle, and knock it with a hammer. Gets it started (will get most of the way off the bearings), then it should just slide out, getting a bit stiffer again as a the non-drive side axle bearing surface passes through the driveside bearing.
i seem to remember having the same problem the first time i dismantled my stumpjumper. it looked like it should slide it but was unreasonably tight. the solution was indeed more vigorous whacking. slides out easily these days.
Yep - same issue here with xt cranks on the bb92 on my Stumpjumper. Was in a hurry so gave up in the end, but I could not get the crank out. Was really whacking the non-drive side end of the axle with a rubber mallet, but it wouldn't budge...
Might have to bodge a removal tool...
Well thats 2 hours of whacking the shit out of it, and it hasnt moved a millimeter!
Any more ideas?
put something soft on the garage floor for when it eventually gives and the whole crank flies out the drive side....
OK, that's weird. Any pictures? Is there a circlip around the axle on the non-drive side preventing it from moving? (my FSA Gossamer doesn't, but I guess they could) Any pictures of both sides?
I FINALLY got the damn thing off, had to get the BFH out though...was rather scary, but now sorted.
