Am I right in thinking that it’s not possible to fit a reach adjust headset in a 44mm head tube?
I’m drawing a blank so far (based on a tapered steerer tube) and I’m thinking there just isn’t space for offsetting the base of a tapered steerer.

Correct. When you see it on DH bikes it’s because they’ve got straight steerers and/or bigger head tubes.

Yes, Works Components do one for 44 head tube. Either straight steerer, or tapered (56 bottom). Its only 5mm.
