Do these exist?
No, but I've reused mine without dying
What Murray said +1
So long as it has a bit of a click as it is fitted I can't see it being a problem.
I used to be able to split/refit used 10 speed chains by pushing/pulling them with my hands*, and they never caused a problem either.
*My arthritic hands on the ends of my spaghetti arms before you swoon
I just use 11 speed ones. The SRAM 12 speed ones do come apart but I've found when they do one of the pins in the link comes loose from the plate and the link is dead.
Cool. Thanks. I need to re-putoline and didn't want to buy a new split link each time
Buy one of these and split and put back as many times as you want. Never had a link fail.
Reading this with interest as i split my KMC ebike chain all the time to clean it, i do use the proper pliers though as per the above link ;o)
I've re-used mine maybe three times now for waxing with no problems so far. Doh! shouldn't have said that, tenpting fate.
Yes, they do exist. Sunrace 12 speed quick link is operated by fingers only. No need for pliers.
Cheers!
I.
Slightly off topic - does anyone know if SRAM Eagle quick links work with Shimano/KMC 12s chains.
Cheers,
Rich
Sram eagle links work with shimano 12sp, some people prefer that combo. Sunrace is cheapest option, especially in the pack of 10 full links. Selling one side of one link is the latest bike industry p*stake and needs to stop.
Connex 12sp are reusable but getting your mitts on one is near impossible, even Ethan Hunt would struggle with that one.
Ace - cheers. Got a fair few of them around and have just moved over to Shimano from Eagle.
All the best,
Rich
I had to (didn't have to but I didn't have anything to hand to undo the master link at the time so foolishly in ignorance thought it would be ok to use chain breaker on multi-tool, I mean why else would there be a chain breaker on a multi tool if you weren't meant to use it to push pins out with,😂
So obviously after doing that a small unease was growing inside me so I decided to dig around on the internet and it turns out you are never meant to break 12 speed chains and reconnect by just pushing the pin back through.
Is it general consensus then that my chain absolutely will not survive if I don't get rid of that pushed pin and replace it with a SRAM powerlink. It's a SRAM 12 spd GX drivetrain.
I'm waiting to get my hands on a powerlink but trying to work out whether it's a stupid idea trying to sneak in a ride or two with that re-pushed pin chain before the powerlink gets here?
^^ You used to just press the pin back in on Shimano.... Then you needed a specific pin to do it.
I've been on sram for years. I'd never tried using an sram chain that I've rejoined with the pin though!
I'd probably go for a local ride ok but wouldn't want to tackle the sdw or something. I hope you don't put out big watts.😉
Why when you could always re-use them can you suddenly now not?? I’ve undone and refitted mine on my 1x12 Shimano about 4-5 times now and it still clicks in pretty firmly. I’ll keep doing it until it seems loose and then maybe get a new one. Seems to me utter madness to suddenly suggest they are single use.
Not sure if you mean my post or not?lol
Just to clarify, I'm just talking about rejoining using the pin after using a chain breaker, not reusing a split link.
Sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick though, which is likely!
'I hope you don’t put out big watts'
Yeah I'm pretty safe then I guess ,,🤣
I had a quick gander and the angle the chain outer plates are pulled as they come off the jockey wheels doesn't seem so extreme, besides it seems the teeth engage more on the rollers rather than against the outer plates. Under the cassette it is probably under less tension so might risk it for a bit of local spot riding. The car park is never too far away.
What's the worst that could happen, end up mangling the derailleur? Something not right about it anyway good excuse to replace it!
What’s the worst that could happen
Plum/ stem impact I reckon.😁
No I was talking about the 1x12 split links are designated by Shimano as single use hence the thread. This seems madness to me, and I ignore it!
