Hey All,

Due to my Wife's Uncle passing away from Cancer last year, I've ended up with one of his old bikes (Ridgeback Genesis Day 01).

I'm looking to do a complete rebuild and continuing it's use to honour his memory.

I'm more of a baggy shorts off road kinda guy, so I need quite a bit of advice. I'm going to keep this updated with pictures and a build blog as I go along.

End goal is a usable commuter and I wouldn't mind completing an event to raise money for charity (maybe Manchester to Blackpool ride?)

I'm on a fairly limited budget and it will be done over a few months, so any advice on component choice would be much appreciated. I'm going to for a Raw Alu/Blue theme with the bike.

Davidtaylforth has kindly started me on my way by donating a set of Blue Bartape (which I'm very grateful for).

As the bike stands, the tyres are old, the back wheel is seized and the groupset is older than me! I want drop bars, so I guess that means new shifters/brakes and possibly wheels (with tyres).

I'm a svelte 15 stone so I guess they have to be strong.

Anyway, enough of my waffling. Here is the bike as it stands... on the next post as Photobucket seems to have fell over!

Here we go... Excuse the hallway, that's the reason the funds are limited 🙂

Shifters will be the expense but it's worth posting in the 'wanted' on here as someone may have some sitting around. You may end up changing the mech (or at least the front mech) to get it to work, although it's amazing what can be bodged.

When you say the wheel is seized will it not turn at all? Cup and cone? If so take it apart and re-grease otherwise knock the bearings out if cartridge bearings and replace (go to a bearing factor or ebay/amazon cheaper than bike shop). Otherwise cheap wheels (like Shimano R500 type for example) are perfectly serviceable and should be strong enough.

Cheers for the advice Paul.

I've actually managed to free the wheel (mudguard was wedged)!

Like you say, the groupset is probably going to be the biggest expense and I'll be posting wanted ads as soon as funds allow.

Ideally, I would want to replace the whole groupset. Headset seems fine, so that's no bother. I'm also wondering how wide I can get away with on the tyres?

This seems to suggest you can go pretty big without guards. (42c or 35c with)

Hmm, that's plenty 🙂 I was thinking more 28c road tyres. Should be fine with that width then I reckon.

Decided to get on with stripping the frame tonight. Everything came apart easily and now just have to wait for payday to get more parts.

Already picked up a cheap bar and someone from the forum (Davidtaylforth) kindly donated bar tape.

The biggest expense is going to be the groupset. I'm thinking full Tiagra for £200 at the moment. The wheels seem to be in a useful condition for the time being.

I've ordered a 100mm stem to go with the bars, then it's a matter of what Tyres. they need to be good for communing and canal towpath/bit of gravel.
Any suggestions?

I remember the guy in my LBS (a Ridgeback only stockist) trying to convince me to buy one of these about 8 years ago. They're good commuters from what I am told.

As for tyres, if you are wanting 28c, what about Schwalbe Duranos? If you will be more on road than off i would consider them as they have some puncture proofing, good grip but roll well too.

Would Duranos be good for canal towpath type riding too you think? I think 28c would be a safe bet with frame clearance.

It will be used for work and training/distance really. It's staying in the family for reasons in my first post. I want to do it justice and get it used in his memory.

I run 28c Kenda Kwick Tendrils on my Charge Plug 3, and use it for road and gravel type riding, but I am very light. I am considering changing them to Duranos, as I think they would cope with it, but accept that they might not be as good as a tyre with more tread on off road surfaces. Most of my mileage is on road though.

I imagine they would hold up to occasional towpath riding, but I guess it depends on how much of it you intend to do, and your weight. Marathons are recommended quite a lot for tow paths I believe. I suspect that the 28c size will be more of a limitation than the tread pattern though.

EDIT Just re read the OP. At 15 stone perhaps 32C would be a better choice for off road too? Otherwise you may need to run quite a high pressure to avoid pinch flats, which may be somewhat uncomfortable on the towpath and other off road surfaces.

Oh, I've lost a bit more weight since (14st 9lbs now) 🙂

Drewd, cheers for the advice regarding the width. I'll have a look at 32c tyres for the more rugged rides and see what I can find.

Schmiken, I would be very interested in them, if only to get me rolling on the road until I can figure out the slightly more rugged options 🙂

Let me know how much for postage, and how you want paying if you don't mind.

Test-fitting the new bar and stem. Doesn't look to bad, and the headset was spotless too!

I've got a couple of saddles, a post and top caps etc with that era RB or Genesis logos on. Yours for postage, mip if of interest.
I built one of those up as a road bike a long time ago, kept it a lot longer than expected as it rode well.

Out of curiosity, do you have any pictures of it built up? There aren't a lot about on the net.

if you're happy with 9 speed, SJS Cycles have Sora shifters for £56

9 speed would do just fine. £56 seems like a decent deal, I'd just have to price up the rest. Been looking on eBay to see what second hand stuff was on.

I'll take a look at the shifters, cheers 🙂

I've just bought some to fix up an old winter bike/CX pit bike, next closest deal I could find was Microshift 10spd at winstanleys for £77.50

http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/27876/MicroSHIFT_10Speed_STI_Shifter_Set

which is cheaper than a lot of used shimano 10spd, but we already have 9spd cassettes, mechs etc.

I've basically got to buy an entire groupset, so I guess if I go with the Sora shifters, I'll have to buy 9 speed everything else 🙂

When you compare them like that, the price seems quite good.

I've got an 8 speed Claris setup in the shed, has a couple of hundred miles on it, but is perfectly serviceable. 50/34 and 11-32. Again, pay for postage and you can have it...

Another option for you: 4600 tiagra 10sp groupset, shifters, mechs, cassette 12-30, brakes all basically brand new. Compact chainset cosmetic wear. All you'll need are chairings and a bb. Also silver so will go with your frame. £100 plus pp?

Thanks for all the kind offers. The Tiagra groupset would be great, but I've already overspent this month (Feb is bad for birthdays!).

Treklee, I would be very interested in that. At least it would get me riding.

Could you please email me with postage costs etc?

Received tyres today, which were very kindly donated by Schmiken. Thanks a lot for those, really helped a lot.

Just waiting to hear back from Treklee regarding the groupset, then we're cooking on gas!

Exciting pics of tyres waiting for me to strip the wheels and give them a bit of a service!

Treklee,

Thanks a lot for the stuff, it will be very helpful 🙂

Rather than getting a new BB and crank bolts, I think I'll go for a HT2 crankset (needs to be a double).

Any ideas on where the cheapest cranksets are? Ideally I would like it to be HT2.

I recently bought a reasonable chainset from Ribble, I went for the 5 bolt 110BCD so not tied into any of the asymmetric designs when needing to replace rings.

Apart from CRC/Wiggle then Merlin are usually worth a look. PBK used to do deals but I haven't looked there for a while.

Cheers Neilwheel, I'll check them all out. Am I right in thinking Sora is the lowest HT2 crank before they go octalink?

I'm not too sure on road stuff, I don't look at it much but just done a similar thing to what you are doing. I started to read the thread, saw it was 3 weeks old and skipped to the end.

On One/Planet X might be worth a look too. Just got some cheap bars and tyres from them. The BSC gravel own brand tyres in a 33 or 40 width. Running with tubes currently but going to try them tubeless.

Stay away from Octolink if at all possible. You will not get a BB included with a road crankset, I went for an Uberbike HT2 BB, a bit more cost but better lifespan than standard Shimano part. Good luck with the build.

I'm afraid the rest of the build is going to have to wait til payday though now.

I've trial fitted a few bits though.

Quick question for anyone who's still with me 🙂

Looking at the below pictures, the tyres are 25c Gatorskins. What sort/size of gravel or CX tyre do you think I could get away with?

Front

32mm will prob be the biggest. The long drop brakes will have less clearance than the frame.

I don't really know much about road bikes to be honest. When you say long drop brakes, will standard Claris calipers not fit?

I'll have a look at some 32mm tyres.

Long drop brakes have a bit more clearance for bigger tyres and mudguards. Standard brakes have very little clearance, and you can usually only squeeze a 25 or 28mm tyre under them with no 'guards.
Claris seems to be 49mm drop (which is the normal very tight clearance).
You will probably need something like Shimano r450 which has 57mm drop, looking at the gaps on the frame.

If you're looking at mixed use, I recommend those On One BSC Gravel road tyres, light and decent, I've ridden a few cross tyres and you won't get better at that price. Had a few rides now and all good, pretty much towpath use only, no puncture protection. The 33c measures at 30mm across the carcass, 32mm with the side knobs.

They probably have long drop brakes on there. Have a trawl through the 'Deals' section too. You need £50+ for free postage but there is also a discount code on the home page for extra 40% off some items.

Cool, Cheers Horatio/neil. I'll take a look and make a payday list 🙂

http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/BCTKR737/tektro-r737-brakeset-long-drop-47-57mm

So would something like this be compatible with the Claris shifters?

To complete the full bike:

Cables (gear and brake)
Brake calipers
Crank + BB (double, HT2)
Band adapter for front mech

That's all I can think of. There's probably one thing I've missed like always 🙂

I'm going to get some of those on one tyres after the bike is complete so I can ride it down the canal and round the local parks when I'm not on my other bike.

Cheers neilwheel, good to know.

The Shimano R451 long drop brakes are a good budget option unfortunately more expensive than when i bought mine for £24 a full set.

Cranks have a look on ebay for a Shimano FC-R565 Compact Chainset, perfectly serviceable non groupset chainset fitted to many bikes as standard but often upgraded to finish the groupo. I've bought a couple for £20-25

Hey All,

Making progress on the bike! It's not far off finished now, just need to pick up a new chain tomorrow and I should be able to complete it.

A big thanks to Mattbee for sending me a Tiagra crank and a BB (using the BB as spare as I didn't have the small tool to fit 🙂 ).

neilpass, I discovered those brakes just before I saw your post, so that's made me feel happy about the purchase.

Cheers for the tyre advice senor j, I'll have a look at those as well.

Here are a few updated pics of it so far. Bar tape not perfect, but it's the second time I've ever done it!

And.... it's finished! (well 99%).

I couldn't have done it without the support and donations of a lot of people in this thread. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I now need to get a custom name sticker made up for the frame (with Uncle in law's name and year of birth to year of death). Any suggestions for that?

Took it for a quick spin up and down the street, all seems well. Road bikes feel so weird to me at moment!

Now I need to get Manchester to Blackpool ride sorted and get some miles on it to set it up.

Here are a few indoor pics (don't tell Wife!).

Thanks schmiken. It's turned out better than I hoped it would. The Blue and Silver just work.

I'll slowly upgrade what wears out (the wheels are not far off).

Got a few miles in so far on the bike to get ready for the Manchester to Blackpool ride.

I'll try to take some outdoor shots of the bike leading up to the event 🙂

Well, I did the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride and really enjoyed it!

Had a bit of a nightmare at the beginning. Forgot my water bottle and shoes! Had to ride on spd pedals for about 12 miles.

Luckily, the route goes right past my house and I managed to pull in and get the shoes and bottle!

Did the full distance without any rest stops and finished in 3 hours 53 minutes.

This was my first try at any sort of distance on the road and I loved it! Might even look for something more modern as I think I've caught the road bug now 🙂
