Hiya chaps,

I'm re-lacing my DT Swiss Xm1501 wheels onto new rims. I was thinking I could just tape the two rims side by side and then one by one swap the spokes over into the new rim.

Is that the easiest way? Or is there a better way to do it?

I've built quite a few wheelsets, but never relaced just a rim from the old hub.

Cheers!

Ricks

Yep, that's it. Make sure to line up the hole for the valve so any offsets on the spokes holes are the correct way round .  Loosen off all the old spokes first before starting to swap over.  Remember to have fine whisky and toons to hand while doing it. Nice evening job really

Yeah, and be damn sure to get the valve hole in the right place - otherwise you'll feel a total ****ing tool 😳

Top tip, get some electrical tape and tape together where each spoke crosses another spoke

Then remove all the spoke nipples and you will pull out the hub with all the spokes still in place

Fit into the new rim (making sure the valve hole is in the right place) refit the spoke nipples, tension and true the wheel and then finally remove the electrical tape

Been doing it this way for years when ever replacing just a rim

I've one the same before and found it quite a relaxing job. Just don' rush it. Take your time tightening the spokes a small amount at a time to make sure they are all even. I found finger tight while lacing made it easier before tightening and truing.

Side by side one by one is the easiest method but all you’re really skipping is the lacing stage. It’s not that much harder and may even be quicker to simply strip the old wheel keeping left and right spokes separate and relace.  Undoing all the old nipples is the time consuming part IME.

+1 for keeping an equal number of turns while reassembling. Assuming spoke length is right it should save you a lot of time in dishing/truing.
