It's that time of year again with the Rapha Rising challenge on Strava http://www.strava.com/challenges/rapha-rising-three-ranges 🙂
Bit more than previous years with 8800 metres to be climbed. Who is in?
Managed to start things off with about 2000m which im feeling quite pleased with as i only had a short window of opportunity this morning before the rain set in for the day.
Not started yet but will be heading into the dales tomorrow to get some climbing in 🙂
Managed a short 40 mile ride today that crossed off 1100m.
Should have time for another 1500m tomoz.
Weather looking better, so that's got to help some.
I'm hoping I can knock the whole thing off in one ride soloing 24/12... it sort of makes sense. 😐
2200m yesterday, 1700m today. Only got 4 evenings left to finish it, though, as I'm pitting at Bonty next weekend.
Done well so far, shall finish by Tues I reckon..
I'm thinking about it....which probably means too late as I'm working. Where I live it's hard to get 5000ft in a 100miler without repeating. Might be set for some very very dull evening hill reps....
1100m in 26km tonight, so I need to pull the finger out and get a decent ride in tomorrow to make a big dent in the total.

We've done a few reps already. Apparently we have to go to the Alps or Pyrenees next year as reps are boring.
It was very foggy and wet last night but made a start with it. Managed a repeat of Cairngorm summit earlier so I've done 26% of it.
1100m on Saturday, 2200m on Sunday.
38% complete according to Strava. Will try and get out most evenings this week. Then I'll see what the weather is doing next weekend and maybe try finishing it off with a big Lakes or Dales ride.
Fortunately, living right on the edge of the Peak District, it's fairly easy to do 1000+m in less than 30 miles.
766m done, not a hope in hell as I'm currently getting back and sorted after some injuries. The entire of Sundays 104km was spent trying to avoid hills 🙁
25% done but struggling after an off on Saturday when I banged up knee and elbow. It was easy in the alps last year. OH is annoyed as she's back shift until Wednesday day shift Sat Sun and has a skills day on Friday so won't get it even though she's had the last two.
I had planned to this, but my first 24hr solo is Saturday, I need to rest!

I did 2650 metres round Derbyshire/Staffordshire yesterday, but unfortunately I'm back daahhn sssarrrf now so unless I do endless reps of Bison Hill this isn't going to happen.
29% so far, did a couple of hill reps early Sat and then a decent run yesterday. I predict a few dull loops locally to keep things ticking along, but I'm trying to make things more of a ride.
57% so far in one ride.
Hoping to finish it off tomorrow-luckily for us we're in the Pyrenees at the moment, so shouldn't be much of a problem!
23%, would have been more but they "robbed" me of 1200ft after having a rethink about sunday's ride.
Not confident, going to have to knock commuting on the head and dig out the road bike to finish it I reckon.
How many are doing it mostly off road?
How many are doing it mostly off road?
It'll be a mixture of both for me. Did the Borrowdale bash on Sunday and I'll be back up to the lakes next Sunday mtbing. During this week I'll be on the road bike going up some hills, then down some hills x God knows how many times..
I've got 900 mtrs to go, cleared off 1489 today and ended the ride approaching the van with a rear puncture. Think the bike is telling me something.
Keep going, it's knackering but fun and something to chase even if you don't do all of it.
None of mines off road. 8)
Another 1500m ticked off today. Just getting over a cold - so been a bit tougher than it should really have been.

Strava says last year's race was 728 feet per lap. So that's almost 40 laps!
A bit over half way there now, just finished a ride, all pretty local, got in 1200m of climbing on the CX.
I'll try and get in a more rolling road ride tomorrow and then have Wednesday off.
i did 780m over 50km and that was the hilliest route i could imagine up on the road without duplication in hampshire.
I've not joined this challenge as i have no hope of finishing really as i dont ride every day..but it boggles my mind some of these elevations
hmmm. 50 mile ride tonight with a few hill reps, and a gentle 35 the day before. 13% complete. Going to take some serious commitment or a few days off work and a trip to wales to do this one 🙁
Hmm. I didn't realise it had started 'til today, so joined up to find I'm already almost halfway! Was supposed to be having a week off the bike but might not be able to resist the lure of the "roundel" 😆
36% through, with only tomorrow, Friday and one weekend day to find 5600m. I'm working though so it'll have to be repeats of Pentlands hills for me after work, and a beast of a ride over the weekend. However, I do really want to get this to get my climbing legs back again...
Etape Pennines gave me a 2200m head start on Saturday, lost a day to the car either side, then 800m of hill reps this morning.
5800m to find over the next 5 days. It's looking daunting in the flat south.
Anyone else adding the extra 48m just so they can summit Everest?
Lovely evening here so managed to get out for few hours - started off with a hilly route then finished off with some hill repeats. There were 3 others on the same hill going up and down too so it added a bit of a competitive element, trying to catch the guy in front while remaining ahead of the guy behind. So much for my pacing strategy!
Now up to about 6500.
Only have 3500m so far, will need to get a couple of big days in to make it.
I hit the halfway mark tonight, with 1300m over two rides, and 2000m yesterday over two rides.
Days off the bike tomorrow and Thursday, so I need an early start on Friday morning and then some brutal climbs on the way home to put me anywhere near completing this.
However, even after only three days on it, I can feel my climbing improving as my legs aren't hurting as much.
Did 55miles with 4600ft/1400mtr of climbing today, more of the same tomorrow . 34% completed up to now so I'm fairly confidant I'll get to 8800mtr. Well, as long as my legs last 😳
2/3rds of the way now thanks to another 1250m on the road bike last night, stunning evening to be out. Day off today. 🙂
Hoping the weather stays reasonable for the rest of this week.
41% at the mo. Not sure I'll have the time or the legs to complete. Probably need at least 2000m on Sunday to get it done - but I'm off to the commie games that day.
Dates are no good for me. Did over 9000 metres the second week of July and not about to do that again.
114% so all done now.
Going out again this morning to top it up & my last ride while it's open.
Done, completed last night.
Rear wheels now buckled and no one where I'm staying can true it up sharpish for me!!
Grrrr 🙄
114% is that all? Poor effort.
84% done. Feet starting to ache on the climbs from all the pushing down.
Congrats to those completed already! Incidentally, if you're doing 8800 anyway, it might be worth adding another 48m as a cherry on top 😉
hour before work, hour at lunch, 2 hours after work = 2500ft only 22% complete with 4 days to go. Not likely 🙁
Another 1380mtrs (58miles) for me today. Halfway there now, out first thing tomorrow around the Trough of Bowland for a biggish ride so it's looking promising for me to complete the challange 🙂
Still at the halfway point. About ten miles in Central London yesterday gave me all of 60m ascent.
I did however discover that Boris Bikes are like Daleks in that they don't like stairs, at least descending them...
87% done now thanks to 1750m tonight. I'd planned a hillier route but actually didn't quite realise how long the whole lot was so took a shorter way home.
54 miles in the lovely evening sun though. Quiet roads, good views. 🙂
Another 3hrs only 28%, admitted defeat and just went for a ride rather than going up and down the same hill. There's more to life! Next year if the weather is good I'll be booking some time off and heading somewhere with proper hills!
bouncy bike tomorrow, as it's been road up to now. Hopefully GT black and red, should put me to within a few hundred metres.
It's slipped from my grasp.
Literally a mountain to climb before Sunday.
Slow going for me this year, the last two editions coincided with me being in the Pyrenees and having it half done on the first day.
This year.. working and on a rest week so just tacking on extra climbs on the way to work, 70% done.
If I'd used a smartphone I'd have finished by now though!
Slow going for me this year, the last two editions coincided with me being in the Pyrenees and having it half done on the first day.
A friend is currently out in the Pyrenees and she did about the same amount of climbing as I did today (1750 ish metres).
Only difference is that she did it in one 20 mile spin from her hotel up to the summit of Tourmalet; it took me 54 miles round the Peak District...
56% done for me. Tough to get this donee down south. I'd give my left arm for a Col.
1100m done tonight, with a few hill reps. Finding it hard to get this done without dull reps unfortunately. A quick 500 tomorrow after work then maybe off to Wales on Saturday to get 2500+ in. Will still leave about 1400 on Sunday.
Now it's been mentioned, think I'll have to do that extra 48m.
I've done 16% and most of that was riding up down the one hill close to fifty times.
Climbing challenges are not easy when you live in Suffolk.
Well I managed 81miles (2300mtrs) today round the Trough of Bowland. Even though I was out at 7am it was still hot, not a lot of shade on the fells 🙁 76% done now, another early morning ride tomorrow, rest day Saturday then finish off on my mtb doing the three passes in the Lake District. There's light at the end of the tunnel 8)

Finished yesterday, 11,075m, including col d'izoard, col du telegraphe, col du galibier, col du mont cenis and col du montgenevre. Some epic views
Finished it on Sunday in the same bit of the world, including Col du Telegraphe, Col du Galibier, Col du Glandon, Col de la Croix de Fer and Col du Mollard. 2 rides and about 200km. It would have taken a bit longer at home in East Anglia...
Will finish it today, only 1000m left to take off.
Only a gentle spin of legs yesterday - so 50 mile ride up & down heads of valley will easy clear what's left.
Been easier this year. Last year rain made it tougher to get out.
Does anybody actually buy the jersey??
I don't think anyone does.
Did see some guy on a Sportive who was wearing the lightweight Pantani jersey (the pink Rapha one). Oh how I laughed!
He had the last laugh though. It was around 30 degrees C and I had a wool base layer on. More fool me.
mooman, after crashing out of the last one I am totally buying the tee shirt.
I was surprised to see you not finish it already!
I've got a loop to Chepstow and maybe over the bridge for the heck of it late afternoon today, then Gospel Pass to Hay and back through Talgarth Sat. This means I can have a steady club run Sunday and not drag everyone up two mountains on their recreational ride again 😉
(Thom)
Apparently you only need one ride to do it, can't say that many repeats appeal though....
http://app.strava.com/activities/170023741
This sort of challenge is a bit tough in Suffolk. Reckon I'd be riding non stop for days to get it all in. 😯
I worked out I needed to do something like 240 repeats of my local hill to achieve it in the most efficient time (something like 28hrs including get there and back).
At that point I just decided to go for a ride....
I decided today that I'd like to get to 10,000m, it's a nice benchmark figure. I'm at 7600 at the moment so 1200 tonight to hit the target then another 1200 at some point over the weekend should all be do-able.
i'm out, was ill this week...
FINISHED!! 🙂
Just done 1300m around the Goyt Valley which has taken me to 8940m total. Mostly road but I did two CX rides in there as well.
I'll take tomorrow off then do a big CX ride on Sunday to get me to 10,000m.
Somehow it seemed easier than last year in spite of needing more climbing. Maybe the weather was better this time round? At least the long warm sunny evenings have made it easy to get out and living right on the edge of the Peak District, there's no shortage of hills to choose from.
+1'that ^^
Did a huge effort the other night that took me to 900mtrs to go, then killed it off the other day. Loooong days and veery light nights has been totally awesomnez.
We have been blessed these last few weeks for sure.
All completed. The weather certainly made it easier.
Shedbrewed/Thom, rather you than me on those nasty climbs!!
I've still got 3300m to go, and it's ebbing away from me slowly. I think an early blast tomorrow will get me 1000m, then a big ride on Sunday to pick up the rest. Some horrible repeats are required.
Well done to those of you who have already finished - that's very impressive!
I've got 1300m to do tomorrow and I'm done!
The weather has certainly helped this year (apart from last Saturday when I was wetter than an otter's pocket and only managed 500m)!
Done, dug in and did 8 laps of a local loop today to get my final 2000m. Relatively dull but I worked it out as I was averaging 7.5cm of climb a second.
Got in and found I was 13 metres short of the total so nipped up the road to get them.
Had a small crash on the second lap when descending through the lanes and found a tractor coming the other way after a blind chicane. I was really hoping to get this challenge done without a crash.
Thankfully by going into the verge and over the bars into the nettles I avoided going into the thresher tines that were blocking my way.
I hate nettles but I'm pretty sure I'd hate getting impaled on thresher tines more.
Done! Whoo! That was a hard week.
Grrrr finished this today but strava says I havent 😥
No 75% Badge, or 100% completed badge or anything 😡
Big day in Wales today. Weather was amazeballs. Mostly.
900m to go. And I am not looking forward to another day on the hills tomorrow. Legs are smashed.
