Is it me or is there a faint whiff of smugness about that Rapha CX team?

ackie, nothing faint about it.

I can't stand the whole nicheness of the SSWC - the enforced tattoos, the beards, the hilarious comedy costumes - but it's their game; if you don't want to be part of it, don't enter. And don't take it seriously.

I can't help but think there's some amazing amazing irony in there though.

These 'crazy' single speeders and their 'whacky' ways of shunning convention, then when someone actually does think for themselves and decides not to follow the herd mentality and be forced into having a tatoo there's an outcry!

Surely a tattoo would fit nicely with Rapha's form over function ethos.

Although I can see your point and sort of agree, I think there are two sides to SSWC as well as any event.

I don't enter to win just to ride with a few of my mates (so no costumes or tat's), but if you do win you should respect to competition you entered.

I reckon one day they'll wake up and regret not getting their tattoo.

But if you don't want the tattoo the polite thing to do would be to stop just before the line and come 2nd.

That's not why there's an outcry. One of the highlights of the SSWC07 was Kelli Emmet's tattoo and its interesting placement.

Love or hate Rapha, I'm not sure they're to blame here. In fact, I expect they'd have loved it from a 'our sponsored riders are well hard' marketing angle if the riders had decided (as it was them who made the decision) to have the tats.
As it stands, they're marketing the fact that their riders won a race. Which is exactly what any other sponsor would do.

PR disaster? Nah. singlespeeders are wearing Rapha now are they?

As for the 'story' itself, seems a bit overblown. The tattoos I've seen in the past for events like this don't even look nice.

Maybe we'll superglue the trophies at Hit the North to the winners' heads. If you don't want a trophy stuck to your head, don't win. Simple 😉

In my eyes there's 2 key points,

Tattoo: Didn't want one, fair enough

Not turning up for prize giving: not good really, should at least stand on the podium.

It's pretty clear that if you don't want the tat then don't cross the line first, it's daft but it's meant to be daft!

And I agree tat or not that not showing up for the podium is pissy

One of the highlights of the SSWC07 was Kelli Emmet's tattoo and its interesting placement.

Yes. I need a lie down now.

and the 'calm down dear' award goes to this comment...

"With no offense to either Julie Krasniak or Chris Jones, who by all appearances seem good sports, in my book they were D.Q.d as soon as they left the venue without matching SSCXWC ink. Tattoos are the final barrier in single-speed worlds, and neither of them cleared it.

Everyone knows this, and their refusal puts the promoters in the awkward position of trying to negotiate enforcement of a tradition hallowed by usage and consecrated by time. Further, Rapha now has the ignominy of "cleaning up" a dirty little race.

The gracious thing to do would be to concede defeat to someone who was committed to the event and not drag this out Floyd Landis style."

I dunno, I quite like the force with which people are defending their little bit of the sport. I know the arguments that these events are becoming more and more like the events they wanted to turn their back on initially but I admire that they stick up for it. Another comment points out that Adam Craig and Kelli Emmet were international riders who knew the game and had the ink.

Didn't the male Rapha rider start off by cycling behind the spectators? Surely he was then off the course and should have been DQ'd anyway?

Their bikes were "hobbled" so they couldn't change gear.

Not turning up for the podium (without a doctors note etc) is not on.
I thought the whole SSWC was about sticking it to the man, man! They should tell RC not to call their riders W/Champs as they did not comply with the rules.

Not unheard of for riders to have to leave before podiums, schedules and timing require it sometimes.

Seems to be a race run by *ers, for *ers, and furiously discussed by ****ers, so kind of hard to get too worked up.

If we set up an e-petition and get a 100,000 names won't they have to debate this in the house of commons?

I reckon next years tat should be the Campag symbol surrounded by 'I'm really a Rodie'. That should light the blue touch paper nicely 😉
