Thinking of head up to snowdon area over bank holiday weekend, wanting to ride the ranger path descent, so just after a bit of advise on the route (is there more than one?) and camping overnight near by. And before anyone says ..... I know it's a beast of climb up!!!
Wrong forum but go very early or late. Any other times descending will be no fun. The mountain will be heaving with people as its holiday season.
Can one of the mod's move this to bike forum please, I made the mistake of putting it here. Need people's feedback
Agreed on that weekend definitely head up late in the day. It should take 2-2.5 hours to get to the top and about 30minutes back if you do Rangers and telegraph valley. I'd be heading out 3.30pm or even later.
Start from Llanberis and you can stay in or around the village easily.
If I go for 2 days at the same campsite (based in llanberis) is there a few more trails to do as well as the ranger path? Looking for 1 each day. And in your opinions how early would you start Rangers?? 5??
Not far away is the marin and penmachno for easy sign following, I think there is a few routes nearby around a quarry, I'm sure someone will be along shortly who can tell you all about them.
One tip for the rangers path if the weather is low visibility, it starts where the obelisks are. There's one on the LLanberis path, cross the rail tracks here and go down a little to the right and there's another one at the start of the rangers path.
I would start as soon as it starts to get light in the morning, maybe even start riding before it's fully light - you wont be going very fast uphill so if it's still a bit dark it won't matter.
Ride up the railway path to the summit (summit of Snowdon isn't necessary but you may as well if it's your first time) then down Rangers and turn right, go uphill for a few minutes to drop down Telegraph road. It's very east to miss the turn so be careful, but it's a great descent IMHO and well worth it.
The main issue you will have doing it in the morning is that if it busy with walkers you will be riding head on into them as you ride down the mountain. A lot of walkers start very early especially on BH's so you will have to be very careful not to upset them - no point in risking access for everyone else.
Personally I would do it in the evening as most people will be going down the hill. 2.5hrs to go up is reasonable, leave an hour to get down just in case you get punctures (we did!). The added advantage to this is that you'll get a lot of respect for riding up and some funny and encouraging comments from the walkers coming down as you go up!! I don't we saw any walkers at all when we rode back down in the evening down Rangers... which was fantastic.
Fit some tough tyres for the descent down Rangers, the water bars are slate sticking up at angles and they rip through tyres if you catch one the wrong way - which you will do at least once when you are tired from the ascent/descent....
The next day you could do a similar route up Snowdon then ride down the Rhyd-Ddu path, that's what I'm doing next time. Drop down to the village, turn right and ride to the Snowdon Ranger station, up Rangers a bit then turn left to go down Telegraph road again!
If morning as early as possible. Well up before dawn.
What I did last time was go up one evening and go down one descent, then the next day went up and did the Ryhd-Ddu path which is more exciting than Rangers and a bigger day out. There is only really one route for both the main bridleways-
Rangers- up the main Llanberis ascent to the summit, on the way back down cross the railway line at the split for Rangers and descend til the bridleway on the right. This is hard to spot as it's just a grassy slope but after you go through a little gate on the Rangers descent the trail smooths out and it's not far after that. This trail goes back to Llanberis.
Rhyd-Ddu- up the main Llanberis ascent to the summit, up and over the top down Rhyd-Ddu, along the road at the bottom of the valley then right after the YHA and up the Rangers until you get to the grassy bridleway (which is now on your left) and back to Llanberis.
Rhyd Ddu is ace......but not when there's any chance of running into anyone!
I went up the Llanberis path on a stunning Good Friday afternoon last year. Hundreds of walkers were descending as I climbed and it caused no issues whatsoever. Just be courteous and friendly, and acknowledge any encouragement. I saw a handful of people on the Rangers descent and then no-one at all on Telegraph valley. Fabulous ride.
Here's my tip, regarding the right turn munrobiker speaks of for Telegraph Valley.
I'm pretty sure there's a footpath before it (by the gate from memory), which gets you to the same point. The bridle way is an absolute shit even to push up!
How did the repair work turn out on the Rangers path last year?
Ok last question I promise!! Haha. How do people stay over, I'm struggling to find a campsite that allows campervans, so is it a case of getting booked Into a hotel/BnB ?? Anyone got any recommendations ???
