Heads hurting looking at headsets for an old bluepig.

Its got a 44mm straight headtube.

I'll be fitting 1 1/8" straight steerer forks.

do i want something like  http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/brand-x-headset-44iiss-sealed/rp-prod130946

or do i need an external bottom bearing?

its for the kids bike

cheers

I'am not an headset and no BluePig expert...

But: I would say you are right. You need top and bottom an internal bearing.

Like the headset you picked.

Would be different if you had a 1 1/8 - 1 1/2 tapered fork to fit to the 44 mm straight headtube. There you would need one of these "special" uberbike headsets with lower external bearing.

But 44 mm straight in combination with 1 1/8 steerer was "standard" up to 4 years ago or so. Internal/internal would be my guess as well.

I used to have a blue pig of similar vintage and I remember at the time it was recommended to run an external cup lower headset regardless of steerer diameter. I had a nukeproof one on mine, which you can still get from CRC as separate top and bottom cups. For the bottom you want the B4 version of the following:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/nukeproof-warhead-mix-match-bottom-cup/rp-prod124574

For the top, any 44mm zero stack top cup will do, however they all appear to be out of stock on CRC.

Go external cup on the bottom with an adaptor, saves hassle when you swap forks.

Hope 2H with adaptor if memory serves.  (Check)
