Im thinking of replacing my old shimano xt m770 chainset with the
Raceface Deus XC Chainset, question is are they as good/durable as what i have used already or should i just replace with the shimano again ?

I've got a Deus XC on one bike and a Evolve XC on t'other, both have been faultless and the latter is 4 years old and has never missed a beat.
The Deus XC one is a double 'n bash and it's ace, even the Team issue BB is still going strong a year on after being ridden through all kinds of typical British - soaking wet crappy muddy conditions all year.
many thnaks steve_b77 what sort of mileage have you had out of the bottom bracket and chainrings?
Go back to Shimano.
Easier to assemble and disassemble.
Marginal difference in weight and i can feel no difference in stiffness.
The Race Face BB's are rubbish(or at least the bearings are).
The assembly of the cranks means the crank arm is wound onto the bearing and putting pressure on it.Too little and theres movement,too much and the bearing has a short life.
I've used both on my bike for the last 4 years but got sick of the constant fiddling with the Raceface to try and take play out.
Joeegg - you're setting something up incorrectly.
With RF Deus cranks all you need to do is fit the bb in the frame using the correct (supplied) spacers. You can find out what set up you need via the instructions that come with the cranks.
Then you fit the cranks and tighten them up until a dead stop. Done.
There is NO side loading on the bearings as such it's impossible to over tighten them and there's no reason that you should ever leave them loose.
If this doesnt match your experience of installing them then that would point towards a set up error and hence any premature bearing wear.

I ran a Deus on my old Cotic. Horrible. Flexy, arms made of cheese which resulted in the splines wearing and a wobbly driveside arm.
Asked Silverfish about getting a new driveside and it was a no go - apparently each driveside is made to only fit the non-driveside. What absolute bollocks.
That said, my Atlas's are absolutely spot on. Been running them for 2+ years without any trouble but my bouncer is going on a diet at the moment. Did consider some new Deus cranks but went for the sensible option. XTs.

I've done over a 1000km on it in a year and no problems what so ever to report, they're at least as stiff as the SLX they replaced.
I'm still on the original rings and Team Issue BB and there's plenty of life in both, the BB is as smooth as the day I fitted it.
No issues with wobble or anything like.
ok its not a deus but i have had an atlas crank for at least 5 years now and its a solid piece of kit. In fact i think it might be the original Atlas design as well. The original BB was made of cheese i think but the hope ceramic thats been mated to it for a few years now is superb
I've got Deus cranks on two bikes, both faultless and no issues with installation or bearings. I followed the installation instructions to the letter.
That said, if I were buying a new chainset it would be SLX or XT.
I've had a set (double & bash) for a while and they've been fine.
The bearings are generally agreed to be crap (but are easily replaced) and the main thing is to tighten up the cranks to a 'hard stop' (not to a torque value).

The Deus set doesn't require a crank extraction tool and doesn't need to be torqued up.. how could it be easier?
I bought a second hand set of Atlas cranks (slightly different crank - bit bigger and heavyer) about 3-4 years ago with a second hand race face BB, it is still going strong. The only issue i had was i destroyed a raceface middle ring - sheared at the bolt holes. I may have neglected to check the chain ring bolts leading to the failure but it was an odd one. I have had no problems with the replacement ring i bought.
I had deus xc, looked lovely but, had nothing but problems with it.
Not recomended.
