Raceface crankset, little bit of play, or too stiff. Mmm

On the GT Fury the lad has a raceface descent crankset, it's got the little red spacer thing on inside of driveside, then 1 black one. That leaves about 1.5mm showing.

However the crank is a tiny bit stiff then all tightened to 50nm. If I add a 2nd black one, it's crazy stuff, so that's the wrong way.
If I remove the black one it's lovely, but a tiny tiny bit of crank wiggle side to side.

Anyone know of a spacer solution?

Mmm interesting idea. It's an 83mm she'll. I'll measure the spacer on cranks in terms of thickness, but according to CRC they're 1mm

https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/p/race-face-x-type-chainline-spacer?color=white&sizeStandard=One+Size

Maybe I could just sand/file one down to 0.5-0.8mm.
We're really talking small amounts needed I think.

I was thinking it might be easier to find a thin BB spacer than axle. Could be down to something
like an over aggressive BB facing.

I don't think I would worry about a tiny fraction of play.  Not much in the way of side to side loads on a BB.  Its not like cup and cone when it means the bearings are loose - its just a tiny amount of endfloat.

Ive run race face bbs like this before with no noticeable issue  MY middleburn cranks have a wavy washer - its not really putting any preload on the bears and yo can slide the cransset against the wave washer a tiny amount as the wave washer compresses.

0.5mm option. Checked the raceface one and it's 24mm ID X 1mm thick

So a 0.5mm may well just work. For £4.19 posted I guess we'll find out.

They've been a tiny bit stiff for ages, I get about 3-5 rotations giving the cranks a spin with nothing attached like a chain.

The DH is a bit draggy anyway as it's got a top guide on the high pivot, as well as a lower tensioner E13 LG1+ which causes drag.
I'm being very very picky here though, but may as well for a few quid

I had similar with a set of Raceface Chester cranks. I think there was a thin black spacer right up against the drive side crank that could be removed.

Bah.... the 0.5mm spacer arrived and was fitted (no play in the cranks when fitted)... i get about 3 revolutions of the cranks with it fitted and a reasonable finger push. With the 1mm spacer I get 2 revolutions.... Without the spacer i get 6-8 revolutions, but a tiny bit of play.

So i need something less than 0.5mm....

Just ignore it.  I checked mine - its got perceptible play in it and has done thousands of miles  All this is is controlling endfloat - a tiny bit is fine IMO

Are these still the same as the X-type cranks or have they moved to a new system?

There should be an X-ring (fancy name for a rubber seal) pressed into the end of each crank, which is soft enough to do the job of the wave washer on most other systems. I did 3D print a set of 24mm spacers a few years ago as I seem to have a magnetic attraction to out of spec cranks. I've a set of M970 that need an extra 2.5mm spacer on the frame or the screw out adjuster come off the threads, and exactly the same on a set of GX DUB cranks, on different frames. Makes life easier when changing BB's if you it all goes together again rather than having to count spacers in/out.

I’d go with no play and a tiny bit of drag if we’re talking it spinning for a few revolutions with a finger push. Bearings have seals and it’s a DH bike where you’ve got gravity on your side for the most part.

New here?

There is no such thing as good enough. There's correct and there's everything else
