Tried to replace the bottom bracket on my Orange P7 which came with RF Ride cranks today but failed miserably! I read that Raceface 24mm spindle cranks were compatible with HT2 BBs so used a Deore HT2 BB, fitted the BB and tried to insert the driveside axle but the thing would not go through the BB, tried to give it a bit of persuasion but it then got stuck. Removing it then pulled the bearing out of the non-drive side leaving it stuck on the axle!!
Most of the stuff I read was people having trouble tensioning the bearings but I didn't even get that far 🙁 Got a big ride planned for this weekend so have ordered a Shimano crankset which I never get issues with but would be interested what I was doing wrong.
Sounds odd... sure it wasn't a SRAM BB?
It should work..... axle clean and smooth?
Def putting it in straight?
Had a similar problem when fitting some new rf cranks. They came with a plastic pointed cap that sits on the end and the spindle to help line it up when installing them, also make sure the spindle clean and smooth too.
Yeah actually I'm wondering if it was down to grime on the axle. Going to give it a good clean with degreaser in the morning and try again. Do I need to change spacers or keep the same as was on the rf bb?
Should be a straight swap, keeping the spacers in the same order as on the RF bb.
I’ve had my RaceFace aefect cranks into a Shimano Bb. It was tighter than sticking Shimano cranks in there, but with some grease eventually went in ok.
Same here.... Tried to fit Raceface Aeffect cranks into a new XT BB.....first attempt I destroyed the plastic cover so had to buy a new BB...... Second attempt I sanded the axle down with some emry cloth to get all the sh#t off the axle after that it was plain sailing.
Shimanos workshop grease is good for fitting cranks, my very first HT2 crank was hard going in until I slapped some of the bright green stuff on.

Same for me. The first time I thought this isn't going so tapped it back out and the plastic cup came with it!
Clean them, bit of grease and a little tap with a rubber hammer and they'll go. Make sure you align it as it comes out the other side though or you'll tap the other plastic cup out.
I just degreased, sanded and regreased and it went on no probs. It was a different shimano bb though which has seen some use.
